I have a CD 22 cruiser with a 90 hp Suzuki. I intend adding a 6 hp kicker, to use to push the dinghy, and as a backup for the main. Here is my dilemma, the dinghy has a 15" transom. the dory a 20". I would rather not use a 20" motor on the dinghy, for obvious reasons. I know there are pivot type transom mounts that allow the 15" motor to pivot down to appropriate running levels. This might be ok in protected waters, but offshore, would this not put the motor dangerously close to following waves, and cause cavitation as the boats hobbyhorses?
I have read lots of postings on the forum on kickers, but could someone who has experienced a 15" kicker in less than calm water, please advise as to their experiences and suggest what kicker mount worked (or didn't work) for them?
