Kicker placement advice needed on a CD16

I just bought a used 5hp motor for trolling and as a backup to my 50hp main. I want to mount it on the port side. However, the steering bar from the main gets in the way, depending on which direction I steer.

I have seen other CD16's with the kicker on the port side. How do you do it? Should I purchase a mini jacker to move it back a little?

Any advice you can give is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi RonJr,
Our CD16 is rigged simply: 50Honda main; 5Honda kicker, clamped directly onto transom, port side. I turn the main all the way over to extend the steering ram to port, then hang the kicker as close as possible w/o touching. Even so, this makes the tiller cramped a bit against port side of splash well. If this is a problem, just raising the tiller a bit deals with it. If you have other brand OBs, there might be more or less space available to you. If you link the OBs together, this tiller problem goes away, although handling the kicker throttle still remains.
My reservation is, how tight do I need to clamp the kicker before it starts crushing the transom? I can get only a thin piece of plywood under the clamps to protect the transom. Is it balsa or plywood in there?
Cheers,
Rod

Our kicker was mounted on the port side when we bought our 16. I added cutting board material over the fiberglass to keep further scaring of the gel coat. We have a minijacker on the 22 and I would use a minijacker on a 16 if I was doing it today. Having the motor on the port side was fine, you don't need to turn the tiller much on a 16 and we just steered with the wheel using the 40hp as a tiller most of the time.
