I am interested in making a trip up the East coast of Vancouver Island sometime in September of this year, and Knight Inlet is one of the prime destinations I want to get to. Most of the East coast is familiar to me as I have been along most of it several different times, but I have not tried to go up Knights Inlet or Toba Inlet. There seem to be several places at the entrance to those inlets to buy fuel and supplies but there is little information on what you will find when you get further inland. Has anyone on here been up those inlets and can you direct me where to go to find information on cruising the upper reaches. Thanks.
 
I have been up Toba inlet to the head. It is interesting, but there are no anchorages. Best done as a day trip.

knight inlet is about 70 miles long and Lagoon Cove is part way up and is a good fuel/overnight stop.

The top 30-40 miles of Knight is remote wilderness with no good anchorages. The westerly wind can turn Knight into 4-6ft close spaced seas that almost stop a small boat. The ebb tide adds to the seas and can turn a pleasant up bound trip into a life threatening situation on the return.

The Canadian Coast Guard told me there is no VHF radio reception in the upper reaches and they don't patrol or practice going up there.

I think you get my point. It is beautiful and can be extremely dangerous, with no VHF communications with the Canada Coast Guard.

If you are brave and want to go anyway, get as much local info as possible in the Lagoon Cove area prior to going up Knight.
Tell folks at Lagoon that you are going, and clear with them upon your return.
 
Thanks for the info. I knew going in it would be iffy. But I thought if there was a fuel stop far enough up and everything was just right I might give it a try. But there is a whole lot to see before that decision needs to be made so the last half might have to wait for another time.
