Lewmar V700 Windlass Question

Hope somone can help.

I just re-installed my Lewmar V700 windlass that just got back from warranty work. The V700 is a full replacement for a Sprint 600 from back in May. That is another story though that I will relay later.

RIGHT NOW I need help from a fellow member.
My windlass top "spindle" has about 3/4" play back and forth while not in use. Putting line back into the anchor line locker sounds normal, but I here non-normal noises when I let line out and put a strain on it.

Would anyone else who has a Sprint 600 OR the newer V700 climb up to the bow of their boat and see how much freeplay the spindle has back and forth (if any).

I would really appreciate it. It will help me decide if I need to unbolt this thing and go back into it.

Thanks,

I don't have the V 700--I have the H 700 and the Pro Fish 700 FF, but I have owned several versions before the H 700 (in larger size).

Is the Gypsy cap rotated fully clock wise with the wrench provided? Is the pawl clear when you let the line down? With the Gypsy locked on the shaft, withe the clutch cones tight, there should be no play.

Hi Folks,

I don't have any play in my 700. The only thing that happens is that the line sometimes jumps off the spindle and I have to go forward to put it back.

I think it is related to the clumps of the harbor bottom I sometimes bring up. I have togo forward to clean the anchor. I have a Danforth.

Sorry for not getting back any sooner. I had company that wanted to boat everyday and then took off for the Yukon River for a hunt.

I talked with the repair faciility in Seattle and then called a West Marine Store and had them check a brand new windlass for me. Both veriifed some play in the top gypsy. The unit operated normally while used anchoring in over 200 ft of water.

Bob, yes the spindle is tight on the top.

Thanks guys,
