Was working fine, but I saw the crack one day and decided to take it out of service since I go on long trips to remote places. It could possibly be repaired, or used for parts since everything else is working fine. Any idea what its worth? $300?

I will add that there was no grease leaking and no problems running the engine. The crack appears to not be into the grease/bearing cavity. I could do measurements/photos to confirm this.

It's probably just a matter of time until the crack extends into the gear housing. Probably not worth anything in it's present from. You could sell it as parts and someone could extract gears and drive shaft out of the unit and put them to good use. I have no idea what a 27 year old lower unit is worth, except what someone will pay for it. I donated my old Honda to Skagit Valley College Marine Technology Center in Anacortes for use in the classroom.

I pretty much agree with Salmon Fisher. I'm afraid that the crack must be really close to the seal surface area and will be leaking seawater into the gear case. Which begs the question as to "What caused the crack"? Someone may want to harvest the parts even tho there isn't much there. I think it was a good idea to donate the lower unit to the college. I once was shopping for a new motor and wanted to trade in the running 90 Vtec Evinrude and they only wanted to give me $300 for the whole works so I can't imagine that the lower unit will be worth trying to sell. Maybe a CBrat will see this and need what you've got here. Good luck

This looks like a crack that would develope with fresh water accumulating in the up tilted motor and freezing.

That does seem like a possibility. I suppose if the crack hasn't already gotten into the seal area they may be able to drill a hole at the end of the crack to prevent it from continuing and then weld the entire crack. As old as the aluminum is, it may be a crap shoot as to the possibility of successfully welding it. If you don't have the ability to do it yourself you'll have to pay someone to do the work.
