Lowrance Auto pilot

All the combiner does is connect the batteries together when the voltage reaches 13.7 amps, and separates them when it falls to less than 12.7 amps. It does not sample amperage in the batteries, nor does it have any "smart" functions. You do the same by switching batteries to "all" or mechanically combining them.

By being automatic, it prevents you from running down the engine starting battery from house battery use, when the engine is shut off.

This is how I do it. If you never put it to "Both" or "All" you can't run down both batteries.

You also don't have to worry about another electrical component failing (KISS principle).

For the most part, my boat operates on a single battery. The other one is there in reserve.
