Total Lunar Eclipse – December 20-21, 2010
December 16, 2010 | NASA
“A total eclipse of the moon will begin on December 20 or December 21 – depending upon your location. In the eastern US the eclipse will begin shortly after midnight. On the west coast it will begin shortly after 9:00 PM. The moon will appear red-orange in color during totality. The entire eclipse will be visible from North America and the eastern Pacific Ocean.” Quoted from NASA’s December 2010 sky map.

Bill,

Thanks for the heads up, did not know that this was happening. I will make sure that my family and I are on the deck to watch.

Bill,

Thanks for the heads up. Will be hoping for a cold, clear night without any wind. Will be talking to the Head Weather Man about that.

I was up around midnight and there wasn't an open portion of the sky near my house. A friend of mine in Seattle (just 10-12 miles S) apparently had open skies for about the first 1/2 of it.

Did see it, up to first half, then went to sleep. Had to be up at 0430 for study and work.

Sure spectacular to see, Thanks Bill and El for the heads up.

Saw it progressing pretty much all night, as I was working an off-duty job (traffic control on Aurora Ave N) in Shoreline from 1900-0000. Just as it became fully eclipsed, the clouds rolled in, just before midnight. :x

Missed this one here in Wyoming due to clouds and snow, but sure brings to mind our first experience watching a full lunar eclipse, which was an amazing experience occurring while we were soaking in the hot springs located in the tidal zone of the Gulf of California very near Puertecitos, Mexico, in Feb, l971. Jo-Lee and I, my folks and oldest brother were having a fine time at the springs when if I remember correctly at near midnight the beautiful full moon just slowly disappeared bringing us from almost dawn light conditions to near total darkness. Not having the slightest idea this was going to happen and never having experienced it before it was quite a shock. A few days later following crossing the border back to the US was even more shocked to read about the San Fernando Earthquake that I think occurred on the day of that eclipse.

Missed the lunar eclipse due to clouds here in Redding, but I'm not too disappointed, as you get to see one every few years anyway. :wink

However, witnessed a nearly TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE in October, 1978 from Fremont in the Bay Area. Now that's a once in a lifetime experience, if you're lucky! :smiled

Joe. :teeth :thup

Joe, I got to see that total solar eclipse, and it was total, where we were. The path of totality crosse from Oregon to Washington, right above the Dalles, OR and crossed right over the Stonehenge, WA, just above the Columbia River, and south of Goldendale. What a thrill, and there were several thousand people there for the event. We were up on the hill above Stonehenge, (a life size replica of the one in England, and layed out geographically and astronomically the same), but it is a war service memorial and there were dozens of folks there for the event, that thought there was significant astronomical significance to the site.

I just thought it was cool to see that big shadow rushing towards us.

My Ex and I were by Goldendale watching the solar eclipse through mylar potato chip bags and smokin' a J.
There were some real shenagains going on down at Stonehenge! I'll bet Harvey could tell some tales about that event
Not too long before or after the eclipse some 1%er bikers sacrified their cook on the slab at Stonehenge.

I was teaching Physics at the time (8-9 in the morning), so my experience was a bit more restrained ! :disgust

And, to quote Marty, and others:

"I love this place!" :smiled
