Jack in Alaska

THe HIGH TIDE set outside in Alaska under a tarp from early Oct.12 to late April 13. After uncovering it here is what I found....
1. wash down pump----in-op AGAIN
2. bilge pump works only on manual---AGAIN
3. port side nav. light in-op
4. Honda water press. tube leaking on back of gauge squirting salt water inside the forward cabin and back of dash panel. 1st mate found that while setting on the pot.
5. anchor light--- in-op., has never worked in 3 yrs.
6. trailer lights (LED's) intermittent. I checked all grounds.
7. sea star steering puking oil out both end seals after only two yrs use. Replaced both caps and bled system. All better now.
8. bottom paint peeling off and looks like hell. Can it be sand blasted to the gel coat???
9. trailer winch cable broke. replaced it with 7/16" Kevlar.

other than that it was in good shape.

The joys of boat ownership.

You might consider looking into soda blasting for your bottom paint removal. From what I understand not so hard on things as sand blasting seems to be popular on the east coast anyway.

They can also use walnut shells. Very environmentally friendly if that's important to you. I'm about to use dry ice blasting to remove mold from joists in a crawlspace.

I actually enjoy "messing about on my boat". Items 3,7 & 9 are repaired. Don't want too get to exited as it may all be done by the time I cover it up again.
THat anchor lite is a puzzler. I looked at it today but no solution. It is not getting power through the switch up to the post/light.
Also hung my Mr.Heater up on screws in the cabin. No more freezing my arse while trolling for salmon.

Will-C is right about soda blasting. I was able to get my Parker center console and Trimaran sailboat done 3 years ago and was very pleased with the results. No damage to the boats! The bottoms looked like new, with just enough surface texture to allow great adhesion of the new paint systems. I did apply an epoxy barrier coat prior to applying the new bottom paint and ensured I had a chemical bond of each coat of paint, by ensuring the previous coat had not cured.
I paid around $500 for each boat to be blasted and did the painting myself.

I received a bid of $125 per lineal ft. on my 26' C-Dory to soda blast and repaint. That was at Homer Boat Yard.

My wife told me to get to scraping and buy a brush.

My Jabsco washdown pump works now but will not shut off. THe pressure switch is buggered up again. I am going to wire around it with an on-off switch handy in the cockpit. An easy wiring job.
