Marine Insurance

I'm making a decision on insurance for the Tomcat today and wonder if anyone has recommendations. These are the companies I have quotes from:

Chubb
Boat Insurance Agency
New Hampshire Insurance
Ace Recreational Marine Insurance
ACE American Ins Co

Thanks for the help.

Take a close look at Progressive. Also, make sure you know the difference between a Yacht Policy and regular boat insurance. See the documents section.

They will probably not want to insure it for what it's worth, they usually go on some sort of blue book, depending on what their policy is. Look at "agreed value", then you can set the amounts.

I recently changed from Markel to Ace. Both are good, but my coverage from Ace is slightly better and slightly cheaper. The main reason I changed is because I wanted to use an insurance agent located here in Anacortes, Scott Richards. (Anchor Marine is in Bellevue). HERE is a link to a document that may give you some additional information.

I've used Travelers for the last several years with good experience (in terms of rates and coverage). Thankfully I have not had to file a claim.

My local broker is called Aero Marine Insurance. The owner (Stanley Ashman) has provided excellent customer service. http://www.aeromarineinsurance.com/

If you contact Stanley, tell him Matt Foster suggested you contact him.

Good luck.

Hi,
Not sure where you travel I would look at coverage by Boat US. on the East Coast they seem ok I use Progressive but Boat US is cheaper. Make sure who ever you choose provides coverage for how far out you go and where you might travel to.

I have had very good response from BOAT U. S insurance. Any time I have filed a claims, response has been quick. I do have full towing for the water. I had a boat that was not very reliable. The captains were very good and I had no cost to me. Or it might have cost me $$$. Repair clams have also been well taken care of. My experience Neal

Contrary to the above......a few years ago, I switched from Boat US to Progressive and found it to be less expensive with greater coverage. I have "agreed value" and coverage for U.S. and Canada out to 75 nautical miles from the coast.

Obviously, you need to shop around as premiums change over time. I've had no claims, but I've heard about good "claim response" from Progressive.

Like Sea Shift, we went from Boat US to Progressive because of cost. Each one is different though. I get a discount because I use them for my cars too. Boat US doesn't have that capability.

My insurance is with Boat US. Here in Florida we are always dodging hurricanes. Boat US is very quick and good when you file a claim, no hassle. I chose them because of past experience, I trust them. Their rates are reasonable. Always get an agreed policy.

Some of the other companies weasel on paying claims. One of my friends is still in litigation with another company from hurricane Katrina. When you get a cheap policy and have a claim and they do not pay, it really sucks. The cheapest policy may not be the best. What about service. You always get what you pay for.

Remember, when buying oats you must pay a fair price, however buying oats that have already been thru the horse the price will be cheaper.

We have had Progressive thru International Marine Insurance (Al Golden) for about 10 years and only had one claim--related to some engine damage ref the Hurricane Ivan. Good agreed value. Good Coverage, except you do have to get a rider for the Bahamas.

I did a number of surveys of vessels after Ivan, for the auction and for repair. Progressive and Boat US had the on the spot adjustors--big trailers, and were both geared up to go.

I tried BoatUS but their maximum value was substantially less than what I paid for the boat and he said they couldn't go any higher. I looks like I'm going with ACE.

Thanks to all

Our boat policy is with State Farm. We've never had a claim on the C-Dory, but we did have some storm damage on a sailboat years ago, and the claim was handled to our complete satisfaction. We picked State Farm over Progressive and Boat US because of being able to get stated value AND use the boat in any state/Canada and up to 75 miles off shore... without having to call them and get "permission" to trailer to or boat in a different area.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Boat US provides up to $800,000 in "Fuel and other spill liability".
Fuel leaks are unanticipated and sometimes unknown until too late.
Here in the Chesapeake, they are very sensitive to this and there can be aggressive in enforcement.
No matter what body of water you boat in, think about the environmental costs and OOP costs of your gas tank leaking.
OR if you are BP....
Never mind.
Just my .02. I like Boat US here on the east coast.
Do the other policies provide the same?

I just recently switched my 2008 Grady White Tournament 225 from Boat US to NBOA. It saved me ~$300 annually for the same coverage which turns out to be about half. I did a lot of research and everywhere I checked they came out okay. They practically own the Sea Ray market.

USAA recently switched to using Progressive for boat insurance rather than underwriting it themselves. There is a special number for USAA members to call.
