I cant believe it is mid afternoon Alaska time and no one has made a comment on yesterdays elections. Are we ashamed or proud of how it went? Mike on Huda Thunkit :disgust

Disgusted with our politicians on both sides of the fence. We seem to be poorly represented--what with earmarks, Pork Barrel economics, lack of morals and lack of common sense.

Dr. Bob,
I can't understand it myself. After all, we have the best politicians that money can buy. You would think that we could get our money's worth out of them.....WhoooThere...I just got it....We only got the best politicians that "Money" could buy....the problem...It wasn't the American Peoples Money.

Maybe we need to put Abermoth on our payroll....WE NEED A LOBBYEST of our own.

I guess I'd just better keep quiet  I have been in enough trouble for having a little "tirade" in the recent 18 hours :female . I think I'll play it safe :| .

A light came on when I read that a candidate had over ten million dollars in his campaign fund to be elected to a position that only pays a little over a 100 K a year......? Or something like that.....

MY TWO CENTS GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
I REGARD THE POLITICIANS AND THE IRS AS THE MAFIA.
SIMPLY STATED, PAY THEM AND HOPEFULLY THEY'LL LEAVE YOU THE HELL ALONE. I TRY TO VOTE EQUALLY DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN, THAT WAY, THEY CAN CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT!
BEST LAW PASSED YESTERDAY FOR OHIO WAS, NO SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACE. NO MORE SMOKING OR NON-SMOKING, IT'S ALL NON-SMOKING NOW. HOPE THAT DOESN'T OFFEND ANY OF MY BROTHER BOATERS.
NOTHING LIKE GOING TO AN UPPER SCALE ESTABLISHMENT, ONLY TO COME AWAY SMELLING LIKE A CARTON OF CIGARETTES.
WELL, LETS LOOK FORWARD TO 2008 PRESIDENTIAL RACE. CAN'T WAIT FOR THOSE TELEVISION COMMERCIALS.

I don't know if this is appropriate or not. If not, I apologize and ask the moderator to delete it. Today I went about my volunteering at the VA hospital here in Seattle. Among
the many veterans I picked up with the little shuttle bus were three
Iraq veterans. One with his mother looked perfectly normal. His mom
said he had residual brain injury from the concussion of his vehicle
being hit by an IED. Another guy was wearing short pants for his
therapy. He had two artificial legs. The third guy was quite
disheveled but wore his camo army jacket with his unit patch and the
Combat Infantryman's Badge sewn over his left breast pocket. I asked
how's he doin. He began to cry and said it's been two years and he
still can't sleep. When he got out he said something like "well, I
just want to enjoy one day, some day . Some of my buddies will never get that
chance. All of that is true. He walked away crying,as I cry now. Marty

Marty,

Perfectly appropriate. My only action was to move this thread to the That's Life forum.

Thank you for your message. It is indeed part of life for those souls, and obviously for you. Very touching.

I wish that I could feel as though some common sense was about to be instilled in Washington after yesterday's political body block on the current set of criminals. Experience has shown, however, that it will be business as usual by a slightly different mix of greedy loudmouths. The American public-at-large briefly focuses on the biennial two-party puppet show, while the people who really run this country continue siphoning the taxpayer's wallet behind the scenes with the eager cooperation of the current lapdogs - Republicans and Democrats alike. After election day, most of the public washes their hands of this unpleasant chore and goes back to their favorite pastimes. Those who have the time/interest/understanding to hold their elected official's feet to the fire are way too few and far between. So much for of, by, and for the people...

Hmm, I feel better now... Thanks.

Sorry for the tirade, but you asked.

Tom

HI MARTY,
HOPE YOUR DAY ENDS ON A BETTER NOTE.
MY SON IS A THIRD YEAR RESIDENT DOCTOR AT A HOSPITAL. HE SPENDS HIS MORNINGS AT THE LOCAL VA HOSPITAL AND HIS AFTERNOONS BACK AT THE RESIDENTS' HOSPITAL. HE AND I SHARE SIMULAR STORIES AS YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED EARLIER TODAY. I CAN RECOLLECT, AS A YOUNG LAD, (1968) STANDING TALL, AND OUR DRILL INSTRUCTOR INFORMING US, (WHILE AT MCRD) THAT VIETNAM WAS NOT A GOOD WAR, BUT, UNTIL A BETTER ONE CAME ALONG, IT WAS ALL WE HAD.
THE REALITIES OF WAR ARE DEATH AND INJURIES AND A LIFE TIME OF SADNESS. I HAVE ZERO ANSWERS, AND 100'S OF QUESTIONS!
YOU REMEMBER THE SAYING, WHEN YOU'RE DEALT LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE.
THERE IS A POEM, I'VE LONG SINCE FORGOTTEN THE AUTHOR, BUT IT GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS,

WHEN THINGS GO WRONG, AS THEY SOMETIMES WILL
WHEN THE RODE YOU'RE TRUDGING SEEMS ALL UP HILL,
WHEN FUNDS ARE LOW AND DEBTS ARE HIGH
AND YOU WANT TO SMILE, BUT YOU HAVE TO SIGH.
WHEN CARE IS PRESSING YOU DOWN A BIT,
REST IF YOU MUST, BUT DON'T YOU QUITE!

LIFE IS ODD WITH IT'S TWIST AND TURNS,
AS EVERYONE OF US SOMETIMES LEARNS.
AND MANY A FAILURE TURNS ABOUT,
WHEN HE MIGHT HAVE ONE HAD HE STUCK IT OUT.
SO, DON'T GIVE UP, THOUGH THE PACE SEEMS SLOW,
YOU MAY SUCCEED WITH ANOTHER BLOW.

SUCCESS IS FAILURE TURNED INSIDE OUT,
THE SILVER TINT OF CLOUDS OF DOUBT.
AND YOU CAN NEVER TELL HOW CLOSE YOU ARE,
IT MAY BE NEAR WHEN IT SEEMS SO FAR,
SO, STICK TO THE FIGHT, WHEN YOU'RE HARDEST HIT,
IT'S WHEN THINGS SEEM WORST, THAT YOU MUST NOT QUIT.

THIS POEM HAS HELPED ME THREW SOME TOUGH TIMES, HOPEFULLY, IT WILL COMFORT YOU AS IT HAS ME.

THANK GOD FOR BOATING, AS TOMORROW WILL BRING A BETTER DAY!

Thanks Pat, I'm grateful for the poem and your taking the time to send it. I'm glad also that you brought all this around to the joy of boating. I remember as an 18 year old, sitting alone at twilight on the USS Albany in the middle of the Atlantic. I was reading Moby Dick and came across the line "...the sea and meditation are wedded forever.." it's 50 years later but I still think of that line on my 16 foot C-Dory.

We lost 54 thousand in five years in Vietnam.

We lost 32 thousand in Korea in three years.

We lost hundreds of thousand in WW2 in five years.

We lost a few thousand more in WW1 in 2 years.

We lost close to a million in our own civil war.

We lose several thousand on the highway's every year.

We lost 2,100? in three years in Iraq.
Thats 30,000 less than in the same time period in Korea. Nobody even made a fuss over Korea. NO TELEVISION.

It was election time, again. So, a politician decided to go out to the local reservation to gather support from the Native Americans. They were all assembled in the Council Hall to hear the speech.

The politician had worked up to his finale, and the crowd was getting more and more excited. "I promise better education opportunities for Native Americans!"

The crowd went wild, shouting "Hoya! Hoya!"

The politician was a bit puzzled by the native word, but was encouraged by their enthusiasm. "I promise gambling reforms to allow a Casino on the Reservation!"

"Hoya! Hoya!" cried the crowd, stomping their feet.

"I promise more social reforms and job opportunities for Native Americans!"

The crowd reached a frenzied pitch shouting "Hoya! Hoya! Hoya!"

After the speech, the politician was touring the Reservation, and saw a tremendous herd of cattle. Since he was raised on a ranch, and knew a bit about cattle, he asked the Chief if he could get closer to take a look at the cattle.

"Sure," the Chief said, "but be careful not to step in the hoya."

Post Korea, many of us learned about it via M*A*S*H. At least to
a certain extent. (I wasn't born when Korea ended...)

Lots fewer losses in Iraq, no doubt. I question the morals of our
elected leadership for getting us involved in this war, though.
At least those that should have/did know there were no good reasons
to go there except to ensure the oil flowed to US companies and interests,
and not Russia or China. (You all do know that Iraq has the largest
untapped oil supplies left in the world, right?)

While many things will remain the same, a pretty clear message
was sent to Bush on certain topics. Sadly, from looking at the
numerous referendums and what passed, many people in this
country still see think they have the right to legislate others morals.

We'd do much better looking at how we our burning oil and keeping
our noses out of people's bedrooms. One is a matter of global
urgency, the other is none of our business.

I have a hard time understanding the vote in washington state yesterday. We , or I should say some of you, voted to raise your own taxes, raise your own electric bill, and take away your own property rights?? with voters like this who need POLITICIANS? and no I do not want to talk about it. I will limit myself to boating and fishing areas.

p.s c-otter you got it right!!!

"not Russia or China. (You all do know that Iraq has the largest

No Russia and China have the largest untapped and undiscovered oil reserves inthe world. We in the us have vast untapped reserves. Also , and you should look this up, the largest use of oil in the U.S. is heating oil. Something like 30 percent. Mostly on the east coast. We could cut all of that with a few small nuke plants, like the french. and no I still dont want to talk about it. the kid has NROTC drill tonight.

Funny! And true!

No hoya!
