Moab here we come.

Well you were all so helpful on our trips to California, I thought I'd ask for your input on this trip. We're driving out to Moab for a few days to celebrate our 49th anniversary on 6/11. We were there about 35 years ago. It's probably changed a bit since then. Let me know if you have any "must see" places between here and there. Oh, and can you find a decent corned beef sandwich in Salt Lake City? Thanks.

Well, for starters, you have to hook up with Tom Williams, username Moabarch, who lives in Moab...Salt Lake City and corned beef sandwiches, well, you are on your own there. Maybe Jody Kidd from Centerville can help, but even he can probably not produce a decent corned beef sandwich in Salt Lake. I KNOW your definition of a "decent corned beef sandwich," I have seen the photo, which is pure indulgence, a heart attack waiting to happen, and I wager you will NOT find west of New Jersey...

I don't know what to tell you about the trip 'tween there and here, but once you get here to Moab, there's plenty to see if you can stand the heat. This is about the time of year I stay inside a lot! I'd be happy to recommend sights once you get here - just give me a call (435-259-1178). We'll meet up if you want and go over the possibilities. And, yes, its changed from 35 years ago - but not in too many bad ways. See you!

Marty,

49 years! Congrats on the upcoming anniversary, Joyce and I just celebrated our 29th on May 23rd. As for your trip, I assume you will be taking I-90 to I-82 to I-84.

On I-82 you'll pass through a lot of good wine country between Yakima and Hermiston. I'd recommend a lunch stop in Prosser. Picazo 7Seventeen is a nice wine bar/tapas restaurant. I'd also recommend a visit to Alexandria Nicole Winery in Prosser - one of the best wineries in the state. Other than that, I don't have a lot of recommendations for your route.

Hi Marty and Dot,

Can't help you out with a corned beef sandwich in Utah, but I can say that you're in for a beautiful drive - so many unique and beautiful areas in Utah. We send our congrats to you two and wishes for a great 49th anniversary. Obviously, Dot was a child bride.

Have fun on your trip and treat us to a photo essay if you have time.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Thanks guys, that helps.

Roger-We will definitely stop in Prosser for a bottle of Red. We will crack it open on our anniversary. It should make an elegant accompaniment to our traditional anniversary baloney sandwich, which we have each year in memory of our first few years food staple. Thanks.

Tom and Nancy-We're all set up for things to do in your beautiful part of the world. We probably won't get half of it done, but will finish the list when we return for our 59th. In the meantime we could use some tips on places to eat (good inexpensive meat and potatoes type places) . Thanks.

Jim-Yup! Thanks.

The best value in town for normal food is the Moab Diner, The best Mexican at the best price is La Hacienda. The very best Italian and at a very fair price is Pasta Jay's (you can easily split meals here - they are huge and good).

The real meat and potatoes place is Smitty's. The best hamburgers are at Milt's (off the main road a few blocks) - good shakes here, too.

Just about everything else in town is what I'd call more expensive than they are worth - but that's just my opinion - and you know what that's worth.

Feel free to call when you get here for any other information, or you can stop by our office. There are two 22 Cruisers parked out front.

If you go through Salina, be sure to stop at Mom's Cafe. The chicken fried steak is to die for (literally and figuratively!)

Checked with my counterpart in SLC and he sent the following info -- I know it isn't corned beef but there is always hope 8>))

"The closest thing I can think of is the pastrami burger at crown burger. 300 west North Temple right downtown. "

There are several Crown Burgers in the SLC metro area, and a couple of knock-offs, such as Astro Burger. They are all run by Greek families (many Greeks immigrated to the area to work at the copper mine.) Speaking of which, Yanni's on Highland Drive and 27th South has fantastic yeero and souvlaki meals.

Pat- I'm surprised at you. That's a picture of a pastrami sandwich from Harold's Deli in Edison, NJ. Here's the corned beef-

Thanks again everybody. Your suggestions really do help a lot.

Marty, you can't see the sandwich for the corned beef!

Have a great trip and keep us posted!

Happy Anniversary to you and Dot! We're about 4 years behind you two!!

:cake :love

Well, as you know, there is no limit to the things I can't do!

And we are 6 or7 years behind here, short-timers I guess (43 years in September, Patty was obviously 12 when we got married).

all things are possible. :love

I've been going to Moab to canoe/kayak the Green and Colorado Rivers for 19 years now, and I'm sure it's partly because I'm coming off a week of freeze-dried food, but I almost never fail to stop at Ray's Tavern in Green River for one of the best burger and french fry meals anywhere!

Marty,

Congratulations on the long term engagement. You two are special. Keep it up.

As to the trip, before you leave Oregon, about Exit 302 on 84 S, up and toward your l0 o'clock is the Oregon Trail Museum. It is definately worth a stop if you haven't been there. If you enjoy history, it could take you half a day there. And remember, you are going to cover in 6 hours, what the pioneers did in 3 months.

Headed SE on 82, first town in Utah is Snowville, then after you breakout of the big hills, and see the Wasatch on your left, take the exit to Tremonton, go east across the tracks and turn south toward Honeyville. There is a very adequate hotsprings "spa" there. Crystal Springs rings a bell, but I may be wrong on that name. Great place to unwind after the long trek through the desert.

As to eats, I only did truck stop stuff when I was running down there.
