If you’re ever in the neighborhood of Elizabeth City, NC stop in.
Last week we cruised into Elizabeth City, NC at 1700. As we hovered near the town docks, people on shore signaled where to tie up. The first attempt to tie in their pile spaces didn’t work out, as the piles are about 30 ft apart, too far for a C-Dory (I got crosswise!). So, they told us where spaces with shorter distances between piles were. When we got to the smaller designated spots, there was an army of helpers ready to take Hunky Dory’s lines. I needed it, as I have never backed into a dock that is only about 3’ long and uses piles to secure the boat. Alma’s Only backed in and tied up like he does it every day.
Upon stepping ashore there were several people to greet us and offer assistance. Steve, the ex-mayor, arranged to have a B&B come pick up Carol and me. Another person gave me a ride to and from the mini-mart to get ice. They kept asking if we needed anything else. The fellow who used to give roses to the ladies has passed on. But, the helpfulness of the town people to boaters is wonderful. I’ve never been to a more boater friendly place. And, that’s saying something as we’ve been to most places on the Erie Canal that are also very boater friendly.
