what would be the best prop for use in molten magma? we had a little poof of smoke yesterday..that mountain is just like the political scene....a lot of spin and PR but just a bunch of hot air and smoke when it's all said and done.....actually the scientist have just up the ante and are now predicitng a major event.
from about 30 miles Southwest of the mountain,
ken

ken, you heard correctly. I have some friends that are up close and personal with the mountain as we speak and after hearing about the increase in seismic intensity per shock, I'd have to agree with them. Only a hanfull of of seismologists and volcanologist believe it will as big as the one in 1980, however, in any case it would pay anyone living close to keep a wary eye out. I had no idea you were that close. I am planning to visit you business the next time I am in Oregon (TDY for a DOD contractor) and i get some time off. Stay safe and keep us posted. Butch

Ken,

I had washed my boat last Sunday but when I went down to the slip yesterday I found it dusted with a light layer of black ash.....this in spite of the fact that I'm 50-60 miles southwest of the mountain and the little 'puff' from last Friday seemed to be heading northwest.

Chuck

If that rascal pops as predicted coupled with the lack of wind, we'll be shoveling that ash off the boats. I work In Longview (northwest) and live southwest, so I'll get ashed no doubt....I won't know my ash from a hole in the ground.

YA, or ash north or south....I think it's going to spew bijillion of tons of ash and it's all going to land in Florida. :)

I would stay away from the ProPulse props - made of plastic, would not be a pretty picture after molten magma...

Hey Bess C Lyle, the mountain just popped again, no biggie but look for a lot of steam and maybe a bit of ash heading your way. Tis a pretty spectacular plume

And this geologist is sitting in Colorado -- urg!!

Brings back the recollection of some years ago, cruising off Fernandina Island in the Galapagos on an Ecuadorian naval vessel, when that volcano gave a pop. Since I was the only geologist within 600 miles of the eruption, Ecuador made the command decision that I was to be dropped ashore and make observations until a proper vulcanologist arrived. Fortunately, the wind was blowing the other direction so it was an ash-free assignment -- sure was beautiful to see the lava flowing down the mtn flank in the dark. Also, fortunately, I was replaced before the lava reached the sea, or I'd still be swimming.

Since, we sent California our rain, maybe they'd enjoy a little ash mixed in with it. I sure enjoyed another gorgeous day of California Sunshine today!

Ken,
I looked at the plume from Yakima. It looked like it wasn't headed our way this time. From here it looked like it was headed north towards Seattle. I'm not a geologist like Bill, so I'd rather observe it from a distance.
Lyle

Thanks for the heads-up Lyle. I wonder if I can still squeeze into my 1980 Brooks Brothers' survivalist Ash Protection Suit.

Preliminary reports are negative, captain.

Sunday afternoon, on our way towards the big city, we noticed a small cloud coming out of the top, but nothing spectacular. How come the thing can't blow when we're watching?

Bill, you amaze me. You tell these stories like they are no big deal. You live a fascinating life. Dusty amazes me, too. He outran a volcano one time in the first Ford ever built.

Lyle - did you live around Yakima in May of 1980? It headed your way that time, I recall.
