Neah Bay 2011

Great pix and fish Roger!! Wish I liked to eat 'em, I'd do more fishing. When I do fish in the C-Bay, I'm afraid I'll catch one.  .If Cows swam, I'd be out there all day/night.

My Son Alex and I fished Neah Bay from 8-13 to 8-15 and had a great time. We limited a couple of days and caught some each trip out. We're not as hard core fishermen as Roger and company but we had a great time and I got a look at Roger's Tomcat with all his cool mods.

Roger,

Cool trip. One of these years/times I would like to meet up with you out there and learn some fishing. The trip "outside" sounds fun, but my 22 would have a hard time keeping up.

Well, we're pulling out a day early and heading home this AM. We've had a spectacular trip but we're starting to get tired from 7 out of 8 days of hard fishing. Plus leaving a day early will allow us to spend the weekend getting the boat cleaned back up and ready for the next adventure (probably one or two tuna trips to Westport).

Thursday we went out to Swiftsure and my net blew out the back of the boat on the way out. I had it in the rod holder on my downrigger and it tipped up and dumped the net. My error. Not to be deterred, we fished without it. We released the wild coho outside the boat. The salmon that were legal to keep, we simply swung them into the boat with one quick motion by grabbing the line by hand. We landed our limit of salmon with 4 kings (largest around 18lbs), 4 coho and 4 pinks. We lost two big kings to the sea lions.

Friday we decided to fish for coho at some of my favorite coho spots. We didn't really find any coho so we went bottom fishing. It was a bit windier than I like so it was hard to keep the drift slow enough to effectively fish for rockfish but we knocked out about 15 rockfish, one cabezon and one keeper ling cod. Not bad, but not great. Regardless, it was a great day with great people and that's really what this is all about.

Harvey, I'd love to see you out there. While tuna fishing from the 22 out of Neah Bay isn't possible, it's fairly easy to go to Swiftsure in a 22. It's only about 18 miles from the marina and on most days in late July/early August, you can make 12-18kts against the swell on the way out and 16-25kts on the way back. I keep trying to get a group of brats interested in a Neah Bay trip but not many are willing to make the long haul. I understand that. It's a bit far (and expensive) to get here. Unless one plans to stay for more than a weekend, it's probably not worth it. On the other hand, if one does stay 4 days or more and fishes hard for those days, you generally come back with enough salmon and rock fish to make the trip fairly economical - e.g. the fish come out around $3/lb when divide the weight of my fillets by the money spent on gas, moorage, bait, tackle and ice.

Roger, I like that idea. And it is a bit closer for me. The main drawback is getting that many days off work in one row. I need retirement.

Harvey, Go to Sooke. Its closer and only a couple of hours run from your area. lots of fish close to shore, no running of shore. halibut year round, and you can use your Canadian online license there. You can not use it at swiftsure. You have to drive to Canada and buy your license in Canada to fish swiftsure. lots of huge crab. We were going to go last week on our vacation but the wind was way up and we could not get there.

Tom,

At some point I want to make the trip from here across to Victoria, then around to Sooke, and all the way around to Tofino and up to Port Alberni. Will need to have lots of good weather, and time for weather windows. Not happening right now. Some July or August down the pond though.
