Need plotter recommendation

Chris, above rather longwinded. Inland lakes works great on only a Windows computer if you have the puck/sensor to feed it. Zelpha

flrockytop,

I would check out NewEgg.com before buying from TigerDirect. It looks like they have several of the Asus Eee notebooks with the SSD HDD and their prices are better. Plus NewEgg has always had good customer service.

Not a real fan of laptops for navigation in our small boats.... Leave the top off the blender one time and oh it ain't nice... but...if yall are headed that way...and it looks that many are interested or have started the journey...... I would have to look in the photo album of C-Eagle in AL on Richard and Cheryle's boat, and they have a neat set up on a swing table for the laptop .....using the aft wall of the V-Berth it seems. It has been a bit over a year since I saw it at one of the Cumberland River gatherings....but, I do recall it was set up to be very flexible...with...or without a laptop on the table.

Worked real good for wine and cheese!! :thup

NMEA 0183 output for A/P (is new 2000 protocol backward compatible?)
Sub $1k
Chris

Way back at the beginning of this post Chris asked the above question. I assume you can't get a 0183 signal from a NMEA 2000 GPS?

yes, it would be just like me to go out and buy the newest greatest gps, from someplace that i couldn't return it, and then find out it couldn't communicate with my auto-pilot. some day i'm gonna learn.

Check with Maretron. They have several different items for the NMEA2000 bus. Especially interesting for this topic is the USB100 that converst NMEA 2000 to 0183.

Thanks for the reminder gljjr, I had forgotten about NewEgg. I got to reading the reviews and like most reviews they ran the gambit from great to awful so I went to the local Best Buy and dang if they didn't have one for the same price as the on line stores. I got one and am typing on it now. I've been loading software all day. I put "The Capn" on with all of the NOAA charts(almost 4gig). So far I am impressed, and I think it is going to work just fine. It fits just right on on my cd22 dash. I going to do some sea test tomorrow and will report. This poor thread has been pretty well highjacked so I'll start a new topic.

Thanks Cmiii,
I bought the GPS 18 to feed my laptop directly thru a USB connector which leaves no accessibility to wires between the Sensor and USB male end. Plug it into the computer with "Inland Lakes" Garmin software and all works great on the laptop screen. My problem is how to get from the computer to the S1000 input wires. Wonder about coming out the 2nd USB port with another UBS connector with wires. Maybe it cannot be done. Thanks for your help. Zelpha

In loading my software I ran across this on garmin usb gps units. Explains your problems.

The USB version of Garmin GPS receivers (like Garmin 18) do not support NMEA, they only support Garmin's own protocol. Therefore very few GPS applications can use Garmin USB GPS receivers. GpsGate solves this problem! You can connect GpsGate to a Garmin USB GPS and GpsGate will make the Garmin GPS appear as a normal NMEA GPS connected to a serial port. And! You can connect any number of GPS applications to the GPS at the same time! Including nRoute!

Just give me a clear night with a sky full of stars, a compass, and a map. That is all you really need. You guys are so high tech.....

Clearly I do. But, I thought that this site was rated PG. I was just trying to keep it clean man.....

WOW! You know my Dad raised us with some pretty high ethics and firm morals that have served me well, but all of a sudden I find out he's involved in GPS-GATE!

This GPS-GATE has something to do with sex and ants, backwards compatibility, serial dongles and all sorts of coded messages regarding r232!

Next thing you know I'll discover he was at Woodstock or something!
