New boat coming home to Edmonds from Oak Harbor this weekend

We don't post here much, but are always enjoying what everybody else has to say and the wonderful boating comraderie. We are very excited for a new boat this weekend, and wanted to share our excitement with fellow boat lovers. It's not another C dory (he's got a 16' angler right now), but still an exciting time for us. Bill is getting a 28' North Pacific Pilothouse Trawler. He's moving up to Edmonds from the Portland area and going to live on it. We've seen some C-dorys at the Edmonds marina- I'm sure some of them are c-brats! Come say Hi- we're planning on bringing her in on Saturday (S-dock). Don't worry, he's keeping the C-dory! So if anyone sees us out on the water on Saturday between Oak Harbor and Edmonds- give us a wave! We'll keep our eyes out for C-dory's also! We are really excited, both for the new boat and for a chance to explore the Puget Sound waters. We both love the river and lake boating in the Portland area, but know we have a lot of fun times ahead of us up here. Also, we hope to be able attend some C-brat gatherings and start meeting some fellow C-brats!

Happy boating all, on this holiday weekend!

Hello Erin.

I had never heard of a North Pacific Trawler, so I checked out their site. Nice looking boat.

I have to admit that the many advantages one gets from a multihull drove me to buy a TomCat, but my heart is still stuck on that raised pilothouse, tug boat kinda look. If we could afford it, we would probably own something like the Pacific Trawler or the Ranger Tug. I think it is a boyhood fantasy thing. :)

Anyway, congrats on the new boat. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Congrats on the new boat! I haven't seen one of the North Pacific Trawlers in person, yet, but the photos look very nice. Enjoy!

Best wishes,

Well things went great this weekend! The boat handled wonderfully! It's a lot of learning for us for the bigger boat with different mechanical/electrical systems than an outboard. And obviously it handles much differently. But weather was great, people at the marinas were great to help us dock, fuel, etc as we were getting used to things. Didn't see any Orcas or any C-dory's while we were out, though. She's much heavier than the C-dory, so less rocking, but with her narrow beam (8'6" so she's still trailerable), we did find several big wakes we wanted to turn into, just like we do with a C-dory for best handling and minimal rocking. Auto-pilot is a new feature for us, which we loved. Gotta learn how to program waypoints and have auto pilot just take us where we want to go! We did have a may day call on the south side of Camano Island as we were out in the vicinity. Watched the coast guard vessel and helicopter inspect there area. They never did find any boat in distress. We also laughed about the fact that the coast guard broadcasted a dead head near deception point- no one ever says anything about dead heads in the Columbia or Willamette Rivers... and there are way more! But, I'm rambling now... If anybody is up in the Edmonds area, Bill loves to show her off! :D

Hope everyone had as wonderful Labor Day weekend of boating as we did.

Congratulations Erin and Bill, that's a great looking boat..

A very pretty boat, indeed, Erin and Bill. One thought about your autopilot: be careful about plugging in waypoints and letting the autopilot drive the route. We've seen boats that have (literally) "hit" the waypoint; as in: the daymark. Also, in low visibility, we have come across small boats that are circling a nav aid, waiting for someone with radar to follow.

Our Raymarine E-Series with autopilot is great, with all the features. However, we generally use the autopilot set on a heading, while always monitoring our progress. Just saying. BUT, it is great as a steering aid, especially when running slow or in low visibility.

Enjoy that new boat. Trailerability is a great feature. We'll look forward to some updates as you get more experience with the boat.

Best wishes,
Jim B.
