Well, the Carolina Loop trip this Spring has cost more than I expected. I got the bug do do long distance cruising again and worst yet my wife also got the bug. A 16 Cruiser was too small for our plans, so a new boat had to be. After much discussion and looking at various boats we settled on a 22 Cruiser.

We just returned home tonight from North Carolina (Mobile East Marine) with a new 2012 22 Cruiser. Triton Marine is doing a beautiful job on building the new C-Dory's and Gene and Carrie Wooster did a great job of outfitting the boat to our specifications. We are very happy with the product.

Now, our first problem. I was trying to update my profile on the C-Brat site with the new boat HIN. I tried to enter the HIN, but I could not enter the last digit. It turns out that the hull has a 13 character HIN. The HIN on the hull is CMC22001F1112. Anyone have any ideas?
 
Well, a C-Dory 22 is certainly suited to cruising the east coast, shallow draft and all. Glad to hear that Triton is cranking them out and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with that boat. Although, until I read the 22, I thought you might have gone to a 33 or up. 22 makes more sense.

As to the hull identification #, I read this: HIN explained. Looks like they used 2 digits for the manufacture date as well as the letter for month. I'd send a message to DaNag and ask him to expand the HIN field, since this may be a common thing in the future.

Dick, we can't help with the HIN issue --- BUT we sure CAN congratulate you and Suzanne on your new floating baby!! We remember well our conversation with you (over margs) about your past cruising experiences in a larger vessel, and your pros and cons on the 16. We could tell that Carolina loop cruise was re-wetting your appetite for longer and farther journeys. Good for you for taking the leap !

We wish you and your wife many, many great adventures on the water. We hope our paths will cross again when we come south to complete our loop trip. After traveling over 3,000 miles on the water last summer that Carolina Loop C-brat gathering you organized, remains a major highlight for us !!

Congratulations! I'm guessing that the second problem you will have is coming up with the name for the new floating dream machine... This will certainly prolong your C-eason of boating.

Boris, we have had large boats before and are not ready to go back to .5 mile/gal and frequent $1000+ repair bills. The 22 Cruiser will be somewhat like camping but we think overall it will be much more enjoyable and meet our cruising needs.

Bob & Betsy, Keep us informed on your progress when you restart the loop and hopefully our paths will cross. I am not sure we will ever do the Great Loop, however we may do some of it in mini cruises. Good luck and safe travels on the loop.

TyBoo, thanks for expanding the HIN field. Looks like I already have a unique boat.

Jim & Sandy, Joan & Steve, Erma, I also am ready to do another trip with you all. However, don't let me get into too much trouble this time, my bank account can't take too many hits like this.

Congratulations on the new boat. I would check with Triton about the HIN. The reason is that the Coast Guard posted in the Federal Register this spring that they will NOT be increasing the HIN to more than 12 characters.

This rule has been reviewed several times in the past, most recently this year. The first 3 letters are the manufacture MIC--which is assigned by the Coast Guard to builder or importer, or by a state: The CMC is the MIC assigned to Triton Marine Industries (DBA). The next 5 numbers are the serial numbers. In most builders the first numbers are the length or model of the boat--and then hull number--or 22 foot 001 number boat. The next letter is the month (A January to L in December)--so the boat was certified or started in F=June. The next number would be the year--a 1 for 2011 and then it gets confusing: last two for the year model 12 for 2012 year model. So they have inserted either an extra one and the boat is a 2012 model year, Or they added an extra 2 on the end. A boat started in June could be a 2012 model year. So I assume that someone put an extra one accidentally in the last group

The HIN will be on the starboard side of the transom, and usually an aluminum plate on under the eyebrow on the C Dory 22 for the required second place of identification marking. I would confirm what the aluminum plate or second HIN shows.

Here is the quote from the Federal Register Feb 11, 2011
"The Coast Guard announces its decision to not initiate a rulemaking addressing an expanded hull identification number (HIN). The Coast Guard's decision-making process included consideration of comments submitted in response to its request for comments on the costs and benefits of expanding the existing 12-character HIN in order to provide additional information identifying vessels." This issue had been visited in 1994, 1998, 2004, 2008 and again 2010/11. It remains that the HIN is a 12 character number.

The HIN can be a complicating factor when the boat is sold. I recently consulted on a boat where the factory did not put a correct HIN on the boat--and it ended up in a law suit. You cannot legally change the HIN. A letter from the builder clarifying the situation is necessary. You need to take a photo of the HIN and a rubbing of the HIN--as well as the second HIN and send them to Triton.
 
Bob, thanks for the information. I was unaware that manufactures were trying to expand the HIN. I looked again at the HIN on the transom (molded into the gelcoat) and it is indeed 13 characters. The Manufacturer's Statement of Origin also has the same 13 character HIN.

Now the interesting part. When one looks closely at the HIN on the transom the last character, "2" looks to have been carved into the gelcoat, not molded in.

I will take your suggestion and contact Triton Marine to get this corrected.

Bob, after further study of the HIN on the transom I believe the last character "2" was molded in. The gelcoat did not form well around the mold making it a somewhat jagged apperance. The indentation on the transom where the HIN number resides definitely was made for 13 characters.

I would still contact Triton. There are several ways to mold in the HIN, but usually it is just a strip with a label maker. It is easy to make a mistake. The boat I consulted on left the factory, was checked out, by the builder, the seller, and the boat was loaned out, without anyone questioning the the HIN--which was improper. Check the second HIN and see what it says, and then contact Triton.

There were only 29 comments received by the CG--and about half were for an expanded HIN and half against it--most from builders.

Congratulations on the new boat. Sounds like you are getting the word on the HIN issue. Interesting twist on a new boat. Good choice (the 22) and glad to have you here.

Being a "Sleep Guy" I noticed your login name "naptime" and boat name are sleep oriented. Good for you. (See the tag line at the bottom of my post. :wink )

Dick,

You will enjoy the adventures and sleeping on my boat is my most favorite place, especially since I got my battery power worked out so I can run my CPAP on board.

Our new 2012 25' C Dory that we recently got in stock has an extra character in the hull # . I called Jeff at Triton and he said that is how they have always done it . Very strange , I have never seen a 13 char. number before . I asked the for 12 Char #s in the future . Owning a C Dory already makes you "different" however the hull numbers should be consistent with the rest of the world.

Looks like we are in a similar boat.

I also called Triton and they asked me if the "Certificate of Origin" matched the HIN on the hull, and it does. They don't see a problem, but if I have trouble Triton said they would fix it. I have decided to go ahead and register the boat in Maryland with the 13 character HIN. I will let you know if I have any problem.

Bob of thataway indicated there may be a problem with the Coast Guard, but this boat will never be documented so it may not matter. I will continue to look into possible future issues I may have with the CG.
