New C-Dory coming in

The C-Dory is an uncomplicated and durable design. Makes it easy for people to add/change what they want. However, I would say that a number of the owners have done a lot of the same or very similar mods to their individual boats (or at least thought about doing some of the same mods). I see a lot of things in this forum that I have done or still plan to do to my boat because they are excellent ideas.

It would seem to me that if enough people are doing the same mod than there might be an opportunity for a design change to incorporate that mod and that might make the boat more appealing to more people. I believe that some of the owner mods have already made it back into the production boats (i.e. reversible forward dinette seat).

Further, if you look at a C-Dory from the late '80s and one from last year, there is not much difference in the design or the available features (not counting those added by previous owners). While the design is excellent and has stood the test of time, there is no real reason to buy a factory new boat vs. a good condition used one because they are pretty much identical. Right now you might even be able say that a second hand C-Dory is more appealing than a new one because of the mods the previous owner installed. There are some excellent examples in this forum where this is certainly the case (IMO).

However, for the factory to survive as a business they need to sell new boats. If they don't come up with a new model and want to continue to produce new boats, I suggest that they might want to consider including some of the mods that have been mentioned in this thread and other parts of this forum.

Some of the mods are very simple and would cost the factory very little to incorporate (e.g. extra cleats at the front of the cockpit, a helm seat that folds flat, hand grips on the brow). Yes, these are simple mods and can be done by the owner, but if the boat comes this way already it's something I don't have to do. Some mods are obvious in retrospect and IMO should have been incorporated by the factory already (e.g. insulation of the berth/cabin, relocation of the drain plug in aft sump to retain less water). For the factory these would be simple fixes. More extensive mods like moving the water tank to the forward compartment or factory air conditioning (as examples) would be an added cost option. However, if the factory developed a standard mod with a standard part kit and standard installation and put it in during boat assembly it could be less expensive and certainly much, much less hassle than if the owner decided to do it themselves later.

Of course, very careful consideration of which mods to include will need to be done so as not to spoil a good thing. However, improvements or added features (even as available options) will differentiate the new build boats from the earlier versions in an effort make them more appealing to more buyers (e.g. those without the time, skills, tools, or space to do the mods themselves). Of course, one of the options will be a more bare boat for the do-it-yourselfer.

There should to be reasons that a buyer will want to chose a brand new boat over a used one other than just because it is brand new (although that's a good enough reason for some people).

Obviously, these thoughts are just my opinion.

Personally, I am torn between SSOBOL and Big Mac's replies. There are so many high end (read) overpriced boats already being produced, that I would hate to see CDs become just one more. Yes, the more thrills the higher the price. Will CD price themselves out of the market?

On the other hand, there is room for so many simple and inexpensive, I call them improvements, that would not add to the cost of the boat: moving the water tank forward under the V berth, saddle tanks, storage under the V berths, LEDs, better cabin/V berth lighting, etc.

I am not a Marketing guy, but could not CD offer a bare boned model, for those of us who enjoy upgrading their boats, and add an options list for those who don't.

As for a boat show model, follow the car show model. Bring the top-of-the-line model with every option, but have a price breakdown of bare bones to limo pricing.

insulation in the cabin would be a really nice option. My understanding is that it is standard on Marinaut brand boats. Our 24 Tomcat has insulation and it was one of the best features on the boat.

Seems like it is good for both hot and cold weather environments and easier to install during the build process rather than after the fact.

I think it was last years show - there was a Venture series boat there, crammed in the far back corner. You know the area - where they sell chop knives, diamond ring cleaning, and sheepskin seatcovers, and maybe doormats. It might help visibility, to be closer to the front again.

Rick - you mean this one?

FreehandC-DoryCollage.jpg

More than a few years ago, it was 2003. This was the second collage, the first one literally was on a foam core with photo prints, I just got rid of it when I moved north last December. I also did a video slide show that Scott Reynolds played at the last SBS that they owned the company, it is on YouTube here. Waypoint and NMI are welcome to use the collage and video if they see fit to do so!

I had a nice chat with Matt from Waypoint yesterday. A very nice young man, and fairly new to Waypoint but with a long history of boats, boating and sales. He is very interested in learning and promoting the C-Dory line. I promised to try and get him a ride and better acquainted with C-Dory's hopefully before the Seattle Boat Show in January.

Looking forward to a great new year with the marketing emphasis.

Pat, nice pix. Really emphasizes the community.

Is there going to be a CBGT in conjunction with SBS 2015 this year? Trying to set aside some time to go if there is.

Yes - we will be doing the brewery thing again on the first Friday evening of the boat show and a TBA thing on the Sat evening. I haven't figured out what we'll do for Sat. but I'm open to suggestions. Two years ago we met at a nice chinese restaurant and that worked OK. Last year we went to the Inn at Harbor Steps and that was great. The Inn will be doing some remodeling at that time this year and won't be available.

Matt,

You should hand out c-brat calendars at the show. You should hide them and only give them out to good prospects (new or upgrade people). Otherwise your supply would be gone fast.

Just a thought

Thank you all for your continued input. Just wanted to let C-Brat Nation know that Waypoint has ordered a C-Dory 25' Cruiser to exhibit in the upcoming 2015 Seattle Boat Show. Visited the factory on Wednesday to go over the order with the good folks at NMI.

NMI will be hard pressed to get this boat finished for us and it will be a 'Herculean' effort per factory. Waypoint feel very fortunate and lucky to be affiliated with the team in Bellingham! We have ordered the boat with some new features and changes per reading your input in C-Brat cyberspace. Come to the Boat Show and check it out!

While we are on the subject of the Boat Show we were wondering if the C-Brats would like to have a small area in our booth to promote the C-Dory/Brat lifestyle as well as our Show boat. If so we would welcome the initial conversation with a representative of the C-Brats in our local area to discuss this idea. We feel that to really get the brand up and running again that there is nothing more powerful than having C-Dory owners onboard with our dealership to get NEW boats out on the water.

BTW the boat on order has a Blue Stripe. If anybody is interested in buying this boat there isn't much time to change the color if you desire another color like lime green, yellow or bright orange which would really get some attention and turn heads at the show!

Once again thanks for welcoming Matt Partna into your world. A big thanks especially for Harvey in taking the time to call him and invite him out for a boat ride to get a taste of a C-Dory.

A good idea. I'm sure many brats would be happy to help. One issue though: " a representative of the C-Brats" ain't no such critter. We are notoriously undisciplined and have no structure. If you just ask for help on this site you'll find volunteers and should be able to work out the details. A 25 huh? good choice, be sure to highlight the head and shower as I think, those are the main issues that lead folks from the 22 to the 25. Good luck at the show.

Inn at the MARKET, Roger! Please do not confuse us with the Inn At Harbor Steps! :crook
Many consider us the best hotel in Seattle. We were named Travel & Leisure Magazines 3rd Best Small City Hotel and 5th Best Hotel in the World! :teeth

But you're right, unfortunately we'll be doing a remodeling during the time of the boat show.

Peter, Inn at the Market is the BEST! Patty and I SO enjoyed our 40th anniversary there...now only a few more years to 50th, I think we may need to come back!

Sorry - that's twice I've made that same mistake.

Just giving you a bad time Roger. Thanks Pat, yes please stay again

I have to make a correction. That's T&L 56th best hotel in the world. And 3rd best small hotel in the US. Yes, I'm very fortunate to manage such a great place.

Waypoint's website shows a used 2013 C-Dory Venture 23 with 8 hours on the motor & dual axle trailer. Perhaps, if still available, that boat could also be displayed, along with the brand new 25 footer.

"C-Brat" reps at the boat show. Sounds like there should be some vests, caps and burgies in the area. Funs a comin' :D  :love :thup :thup
