New Car for our Brothers in Blue?

The Carbon Motors vehicle has been known about of for over a yr in LE circles. Ford will discontinue the venerable Crown Vic Polic Interceptor in 2011, and I suspect that had a lot to do with CM moving forward.

Ford is offering two variations of the new Taurus as replacement. They used design input from acutal LE dept members to make the cars LE user friendly. Chevy is also unveiling a new Caprice for LE only. And Chrysler will continue to offer the Charger 4 door. Right now our dept is evaluating all. I really doubt we will go with the Carbon Motors offering. If i had to WAG it, I'd say the new Chevy or Ford, but what do I know. ..

Our cars get beat to hell and back. My dept retires them after 110K miles and by then, they need to be. (think about that the next time you're in a Crown Vic cab) Their claim that the CM will make it to 250K seems like a long shot. The drivetrain/engine may, but that's only one component. They also have a ton of "bells & whistles", which in a perfect world would be great. Reality is, that in this economy, dept's are looking to spend the least possible on equipment. Trust me; I see it all the time. I see no price yet too. :?

The one issue I see as problematic is front wheel drive. The drive trains just don't hold up. Ford's base model is this only, while the more expensie version is all wheel. THAT would be great, but again, cost raises it's ugly head. CHevy and Doge are rear wheel.

I looked over the website pretty thoroughly. Couldn't find any info on availability to private individuals (or criminals who want to keep up with the competititon... )

I would think (hope) that it would be bulletproof (figuratively speaking, no idea about actual ability to stop bullets) and would be ultra-reliable, for fleet use. A car for the rest of your life, as it were.

I think they will have a difficult time penetrating the LE market. LE agencies are notoriously conservative about trying new cars. I presume the car will have all the interior design features needed so won't comment about that. Ability to repair the car will be very important, My agencies had deals with local dealerships for repairs, larger depts usually have their own service shops. Most likely they will give some medium sized city a great deal to serve as guinea pig for 40-50 cars and it will take a few years for other cities to be willing to try something new. My cars were always 4WD SUV's since we operated in snow and mud a lot a "city" car, i.e. crown vic would not have survived.

To me one of the most interesting aspects is the diesel engine--0-60 in 6.5 seconds--and top speed greater than 150 mph. I wonder what already developed diesel, with front wheel drive they are using.

I also wonder about high speed handling with the diesel, front wheel drive?

There are always going to be cars which can out run the LE cruisers--but that is not the issue.
