New engine maintenance

The lower case oil is easy. To empty remove the bottom plug then the top (less oil on your hands). Let the oil drain. Using a pump attachment on the gear oil bottle (commonly available, see example in link below) pump the gear oil into the drain hole until it just starts coming out the fill (top hole). Insert the plug in the top hole, then remove the fill hose and insert the drain (lower) plug.

I change the washer each time. The plugs get changed when the slot for removal tool gets too torn up.

Yes, thanks.. It IS easy! Problem I've having is that the owners manual does not give a SPEC for the gear oil. 90W or 75W90? GL-4 or GL-5 (apparently GL-5 is bad for gearboxes with yellow metals in them)... Just not sure what to use!

Online BF100A owners manual says "API Standard (GL-4) SAE 90 Hypoid gear oil"

Yes, and my 2006 Honda outboard says GL-4 OR GL5. So it would seem that a 2021 specifying GL-4 would be for a reason.(?) the "internet" says GL-5 can be "corrosive to soft metals such as brass and bronze". There's no brass or bronze in there, but isn't the entire casing made of aluminum (soft metal)!?

Problem is I can't find any GL-4 that is also 90W "marine"... Confusing!

Anyone?

I work on all makes of outboards as a hobby and have done this for years, I also provide local outboard training. My go to 99% of the time for parts is boats.net easy to work with, they have real people to speak with, they take returns and they can get my my parts quickly if I need them.

Hi Steve, I'd be curious of your input on my above inquiry about the Gear Oil (see above).. Why is my 2021 BF100A specifying only GL-4, and then the Honda gear oil they sell is GL-4 & GL-5 (Honda part# 08739-90W). The internet is saying GL-4 is a specific type and not just "superceded" by GL-5...

I find the shop manuals to be hard to follow until I already know the procedure. You can find some good Youtubes that show better how to 1) change oil, 2) replace lower unit lube, and particularly, 3) flush cooling system, and particularly 4) replace the impeller.

BTW, i did a south sound cruise a few years ago and camped at the Eagle Island marine park. Great area you're in!

A great place. If you catch the pass between McNeil and Anderson at Eagle at low tide, about 50 seals will be on the shoal there. We've had a lot of Biggs orcas here lately, and the seals are very nervous.

I have been using Quicksilver Marine Gear Lube SAE 90 GL-4 in my 2017 Suzuki 140 for about 6 years now. Until recently, I discovered that Suzuki recommends that I use GL-5 for my motor. I will now switch to GL-5. The lube I am referring to in the link below says, "Meets API GL-4" requirements, "Meets or exceeds the needs of all marine engine manufacturers' gear lube" and is "Recommended for all stern drive gear cases and lower unit on all outboards."

One thing I don't love about Honda is finding parts - even basic maintenance parts - is a PITA. Anyone have any easy method of getting parts?

I'm not sure what type of gear oil and oil filter the 2021 BF100A takes. Does anyone know how to find this info for sure?

Boats.net says they need to serial# of my motor to be sure. I don't have that right now.

Any 80/90 gear oil will be just fine any & 10-30 / 10-40 engine oil

tsturm is correct but the use of a specifically designed lower unit gear lube has additives that help protect against corrosion and wear for the lower unit on an outboard motor. A quote I found on-line and one that I agree with is: "the most common and recommended type is SAE 90 gear oil. This oil is specifically designed for use in gearboxes and will help to keep the gears lubricated and operating smoothly." One may wish to go with the lube that the manufacture recommends for their specific motor and based on the year of that motor. It may cost more per quart, but for peace of mind, I think it is worth it in the long run.
