New LED Cabin Lights Purchased at Boat Show

We bought three IMTRA BA15d warm light LED cabin lights at the boat show (sold by Fisheries Supply), which I just finished popping in, it took about five minutes for all three. They are direct replacements for the 1004 incandescent bulbs, and it was a snap. They are a 9 LED square circuit board wired to a bayonet plug that goes right into the existing socket for the 1004 bulbs. A little round pressure sensitive piece holds the circuit board to the top of the fixture. They seem plenty bright, and at $15.60 each (probably could have gotten for a bit less on the net, but hey, there we were), should really lessen power consumption for lighting at anchor. I put two over the dinette and one over the galley. I might need to get three more, one for the head and two for the vee-berth, but we are going to give these a try first. Next up: look for an LED anchor light replacement bulb!

I also bought two more LEDs like Pats. I had already done one of the cabin lights last year. And I grabbed the all-around light from the C-Dory 22 on the floor and went back up to Popeye's Booth (www.popeyesmarine.com) and found a replacement for the All-Around Light. It is a Source LED Victory # AA00195BLED LED Bulb, 7 X SMT, #90
$24.95. Don't need to replace the running lights since they are only one usually when underway and the alternator is taking care of things.

I can see the galley light, dinette light(s), anchor light and even one in the V-berth, but I don't think I'll be haning out or reading on the head, so one in there would be a luxury.

Well, I assume you already have SOME kind of light in the head, no? The LEDs are just about reducing power consumption. And actually, the head is sometimes referred to as "the library"!

These are labeled as "warm," and are not noticeably different from the incandescent bulbs they replaced, if anything, they are a bit brighter. We like them.

Pat-

What's the light color like? Some of the LED's are very "blue" in their color tone- are these a warmer "yellower" color?

New C-Dory's should come from the factory with LED lights, or at least make them available as an option. There aren't that many lights on these boats, so the cost wouldn't be terribly high. And it's a simple improvement that (I think) would be appreciated by buyers interested in reliable, efficient lighting to go with their reliable and efficient boat.

Thanks Pat, good and timely information. Replacing some of the incandescent bulbs is on my winter to do list and you made tracking down the right ones a lot easier. I am going to check on line for a dealer.

Yes Tom, those are the ones. $15.00 at the show. They are definitly brighter than the stock incadescent.

If you have an account with Fisheries (not a charge account, just an "account") the price on the Fisheries website is $15.80 each. So I guess the effective discount is $0.80 from the account price!

All it takes to open an account with Fisheries is to ask or maybe do it online, I disremember.

I got three of these to replace some cheap chinese knockoffs that have slowly faded in brightness over the past year and installation was a slight head scratcher for me.

The connection is simple but the panel was a bit too large to fit flush inside our 2005 fixture above the normal bulb position and when there, at least one of the leds was obscured by the socket position. I ended up sticking them to the clear plastic lens facing downward of course. That seems to be fine and unless they put out significant heat, this position will work alright for us. I do like the color of the light and they are quite bright.

I will leave one on for a couple of hours next time I am out there just to see of there is any lens meltage.

Greg

Greg,
LED's run very cool relative to incandescent bulbs. I doubt you'll detect any rise in temperature much less have a problem with the lens melting. Nonetheless, it's good to do the test.
