NEW Raymarine C140W (wide) for $999

Yes, it has built in USA Navionics......I needed to use 3 different cards to cover the states... I did not have a DSM module hooked up to mine as I thought the screen was to small...but now I can have 3 or 4 open windows without crowding the screen. My smart pilot would not connect up with the old unit, but the new unit accepts it ... the new unit not only has sea-talk but the newer sea-talk 2 connections...(5 pins I think)

It also has 50 satellite built in GPS our old units could only hook up to 16...and needed a outside mounted GPS sender.

Today I cleaned off my dash and made a cardboard template...and wow is that thing huge...like watching Big Screen TV..

Im buying Chromers setup and meeting him this weekend. One question I had was how difficult and expensive will it be to add autopilot feature. I would really love to be able to cruise with that feature.

Also, is autopilot more difficult to add to a tomcat given it has 2 engines or is it tied to the steering wheel.

Boat will be a tomcat24 if that makes any difference.

I had the s1000 Raymarine autopilot on Captain's Cat (now sold) with the E-80. Seamless install, plenty of hydraulic power to handle both engines. the wireless feature was nice too, you don't have to stay at the wheel (but do have to look out for obstructions). Will not take the place of a lookout!

It is costing me a bit more than I had thought....although the C80 unit is still on EBAY and the bid is now up to $681 and rising...so it only really cost me just over $300 for the new unit...and it is huge...

BUT !!! Nothing interchanges... I thought it was going to be a plug and play thing...but the C140W takes an more powerful DSM unit for the fish finder and a digital radome...I thought my C80 had a digital radome but I took the top off and it is only a 2K unit and my 140 takes a digital 4kw... so it's back to EBAY to sell the radome and my old DSM 25 module...

Once the total package is up and running though it will be AWSOME !

Today I took some 3" strap metal and bent up a mounting bracket...heck if I am going to pay $60 for something that only took me 30 minutes to make...

The EBAY auction finally finished and I sold the C80 unit for $710 so the new C140w only ended up costing $290...... but now the new expenses start....

I made the mounting bracket out of some scrap 3" wide steel that I had...the new unit does not come with a mounting bracket like the old unit
did.... saved about $75 ( outrageous )

The new unit uses the new Seatalk NG cables so good old Raymarine jacked the price on each cable up to over $100 each... On EBAY there are generic Seatalk NG cables for about $30 each...( still outrageous )

The radar dome is next...I ordered a new dome (4Kw instead of 2Kw) from Digital Oasis for $850...and will list the old one of EBAY....hope to get possibly half.

The new unit takes a different DSM unit than I have...I use a DSM25 and it wants a DSM30...so ordered a new one for $450....more EBAY sales upcoming......hope to get half again...

and it goes on.... but I will end up with a much better system than I had.

Joel it is worth it--now you will will the same electronics as that Nordhavn 76 in Dana Point! (OK you will have to add the $10,000 FLIR camera, plus some other satellite features for a cool $25,000...but the 14" screen will still be mighty impressive. Do you have to raise the seat to see out forward?

Take care!

No, the seat is already raised slightly....I installed a spring base under the seat years ago to soften the ride... I mounted the unit in the boat and it really will work well....... I removed my separate fish finder from the dash as now I will have it in the C140W.... before the screen was too small to have 3 or 4 windows open at the same time....that new screen is huge...plus I will upgrade from a 2K to a 4K radar...lots of positives on this upgrade.

My new to me 25 has an old and small GPS so I'm going to need EVERYTHING. GPS, radar, radar mount, and auto pilot and I know very little about this stuff.

Would this be a good one to buy or what should I buy?

Thanks in advance for all info and ideas!!

Depending on how you mount it. I concluded that the screen was too big for my particular application. I am now experimenting with the idea of keeping c-80 for radar / fishfinder and using ipad for chart plotter.

Hi Ken..... You will need a dome ($850) a DSM module for fish finder ($4750 some cables ($250) and a transducer ($125)....all discounted parts prices... so if it would work for you it is a killer deal, but first make sure that it will fit your dash.... I was talking to some one with a Tomcat 24 and the rake of the windshield and the dash would not allow a unit as large as the Raymarine C140W....

I think if I were looking at a totally new system I would look hard at the Garman unit.... I have seen some discount deals on Garman stuff and the screen views I have seen are real nice.....I would imagine their stuff is as good as their GPS ....I have one of those on my motorcycle and it has worked flawlessly cross-country several times and over 10 years of riding.

As far as GPS I would look at new units that receive 50 channels...our older units only receive 19 channels (I think that is the number)..

I can tell you, that the system with the C140W is a top of the line unit, but it is no longer in production...still comes with a 3 year warintwarranteethat is all I need...the original price of the C140W was over $3000 ...the units are all new unsold inventory and on sale this month for $999...(smoking deal)

Redbaronace.... Your C80 has a fine chartplotter built in....all you need do is have the proper chip in it.....chips are roughly $140 to $199
I had the West Coast chip in mine and it worked perfectly, makes it especially good when you do a radar overlay on it....

The new C140W comes with an internal GPS and pre loaded all-in-one chip installed

You could always bring yer boat up to Northern California and I will install it for you (fer free) and show you how to use it all...

Oh man, that would be nice. Trying to get the trailer thing figured out still. If I get one, I might take you up on that offer. As of now, im trying to get all the bugs worked out of boat and existing systems itself. Seems like the more I look, the more items I find that need fixing. But so it goes with a used, new to us boat. Overall, I am just glad to be in the c-brats fellowship.

Last summer I started looking at possibilities to replace my 2006c. I only really looked at Garmin and Raymarine.

If I were getting a "small" unit, I liked Kerri-On's recommendation for the Garmin 571 (or whatever would be today's equivalent). Apparently he used to work at West Marine and over years of experience found this to be a very satisfactory unit for a wide variety of customers. Lots of bang for the buck.

That said, I wanted something a bit larger. To that end, I considered the Raymarine E-9 or E-7 and the Garmin 740. I liked some things about each. The Garmin seemed a little bit slower/older because the Raymarine had just been updated; however now the Garmin 741 is about to come out, so they are both relatively fresh. I find the function of my Garmin 2006c to be very intuitive, so I lean toward Garmin, but the Raymarine has some nice features too (joystick and buttons in addition to touch screen, iPad integration) (the new Garmin may have something for iPad - not sure yet). I also really liked the 9" screen size.

Ultimately, last summer, neither the 740 nor the E-7/9 made me want it enough to give up my 2006c, although I will certainly have a look at the 741 when it comes out.

I would say that - unless you have some reason you know you do or don't want one specific brand/model - it's good to check them out in person, just to see how the interface feels. After all, that's really the biggest thing about them, in many ways - how they will "handle" to your particular eyes and brain. And then too, as was mentioned above, make a mockup and test it at the helm, to make sure it's not too big there.

[link to 741 package] But they are out of stock. This would include everything except the auto pilot and the CHIRP transducer.

"Out of stock" is slightly misleading, as the 741 is new and has not been available (to anyone) yet, at any store. Latest I heard is that it may be available in May 2013. I'm eager to check it out.

Shouldn't be a problem to hook an auto-pilot to the 741, right?

That Garmin 741 is actually the perfect size for my dash. Due to the angles of the TC windshield, it makes mounting electronics difficult. I did discover that the perfect size for my dash is an IPAD size. I plan to get a display that is the roughly the size of an iPad. The actual Ipad will be the 2nd display mounted on a Ram Mount.

The Garmin 741 seems to fit the bill perfect. Price is still over what I have allocated for electronics however.

I just got a price for labor to install the 741 and radar at $833. Is it that difficult to install?
