New safety boat opportunity, August 24

Port Townsend this weekend, June 29. Meet at Fort Warden marine Science Center at 09, or come to Mystery Bay State Park Friday night.

52 Rowers, and perfect conditions. 3 C-Dorys and a good outcome. No rescues, even though the main group of racers on the starting lap ran smack headlong into the Washing state ferry leaving Port Townsend. The Ferry Captain was very accommodating and the racers were only lightly affected.

Thanks to Dan on C-Renity and Dave on Plan C for coming out and for the opportunity.

Now that the Port Townsend half is done, do we have any more interest in the Cross Sound race on August? The last one went off without a hitch, and there was a free lunch. Dave, do we need to contact the planner for the Cross Sound prior to the date. Or will it be the same person doing the lead. I really appreciated the handout for us.

Still looking for more boats and some good suggestions on where to overnight on the Seattle side for the Friday night prior to this race. The start is at Alki Beach, which should be fun for making a safety committee meeting prior to the start. Ideas?

You can see a website on the Great Cross Sound Race at http://soundrowers.org/TheGreatCrossSoundRace.aspx. This website shows a diagram of the intended race course. This website also shows they have a pre-race meeting at 0815 on that Saturday AM, August 24th.

As far as finding a place to stay the night before.... looking at the Active Captain website, it appears Bell Harbor marina in Seattle is about the same distance from Alki Beach (i.e. where the race starts) that Blake Island - which is a WA. State Marine Park - is. The Active Captain website has extremely positive reviews of the Bell Harbor Marina.

So both Bell Harbor and Blake Island are about equal options if we want to get on a dock. Anchorage is available at either Port Blakely or Blake Island at about the same distance from Alki Beach.

Everything I have read implies finding moorage at Bell Harbor is hard to get because their slips are in such great demand so - if that was the plan - we would want to try to make reservations ASAP. Blake Island State Park would also likely be very difficult to get into on a summer weekend but if we could find a slip in there our annual WA State Moorage permits would at least cover the cost.

hi Dan,

I talked to Jeff K from the Seattle rowers and he said that Elliot Bay marina is close to their start point. I have not called them yet but will try soon. I have not been to Blake Island but do like the idea of the park pass working.

As to the safety boat or captains meeting, I asked about a dock near the launch. There is none, BUT Jeff said if we were to anchor or raft up he would paddle out to where we are. I told him I wasn't interested in putting my boat onto the beach. I personally think that is asking for trouble. Anchoring and then paddling in would be OK but takes some time to get undone after and I would want more than the 15-20 min we got in PT.

He was very accommodating and appreciative of our service and was one of the rowers at PT who was close to the first ferry.

Do you know if we can get reservation for dock at Blake Island?

I will check with Elliott Bay Marina ASAP for space for 8/23.

Good morning Harvey.

Like the other State Parks there are no reservations possible at Blake Island as far as I know.

Elliott Bay Marina does look to be about the same distance away from Alki Point that Bell Harbor Marina and Blake Island are.

Not sure I like the idea of anchoring out there either; it appears to be an extremely open area w/ no bays or coves to offer any protection. I won't risk that if it's at all rough. Perhaps they can just clue us into the briefing via radio since as you said 15 minutes is nowhere's enough time after the briefing to secure from anchoring and get under way.

Take care,

We will likely not make this but I would suggest you look at Elliot Bay marina as an overnight stopping place. We have been to it, Bell Harbor, and Blake Island. It will offer the best chance of moorage.

Thanks for your input Barry.

Hope you and Patti are both healthy and doing well!

We hope we will see you guys at the upcoming July 26-28th La Conner CBGT.

Take care and thanks again,

This race is next Saturday. I will be launching from the Don Armeni boat launch in west Seattle 6:30-7am Saturday morning. I have seats for one or two people to ride along.

Great to hear we will likely see you out there Saturday AM George!

Per Harvey, according to Jeff (race coordinator), look for a yellow shelter / tent on Alki Beach. The starting/finish line will be perpendicular from the yellow beach shelter to a red floating buoy.

Since there is no dock and the area is pretty open water - and might be fairly rough - I will not be putting into the beach (and I do not believe Harvey is planning to either). Therefore, we will likely not be going ashore for a pre-race meeting.

Take care and thanks for joining us!
