Newbie: ballpark cost to repower CD 22 w/ Honda 90?

Folks-

Newbie Mawgie here, shopping for a CD 22', maybe a 19'.
If I find a boat with mediocre power, I'd like to have a ballpark idea on the cost of a repower.

I am assuming a CD 22', and a 90 Honda 4 stroke.

Best price I can find on a Honda 90 hp 4 stroke is at Ed's Marine Superstore, about $7500. Add shipping and the cost to have a local marine mechanic rig it, and where am I at?

Is $9000 - $9500, soup to nuts (motor, shipping, rigging) about right?

Thanks-Mawgie

Do some research on Ed's superstore. Some have had good luck--others have not. You may not be able to get the engine you want at the price you want. Or it may work out for you.

Consider that you have to buy the cables, the binnacle, the steering etc--so there may be other costs (by steering, I mean that you may want to upgrade to hydraulic with the larger engine (I have run 115's with NFB cable and it is fine....

$100 per hp
90 = 9000

Great! We need a kicker and a Suzuki 9.9 for $990 would be awesome! :)

Sorry, but the formula is only effective at about the 50HP size and up! A 9.9 will cost you upwards of 2K$

Those little ones take almost as much labor to build as the big ones, the material is a small part of the cost, apparently..

I repowered last year with a used 2003 90hp Honda. You can find these in the $5k range. Ours had 80 hours on it and it was a trade-in. I already had the Honda controls that came with the boat. Labor for the install varies. If you want to go the used Honda rout, go to the Honda marine website and do a dealer search for Honda dealers in your area. I searched MT, WA, and ID, all with-in a days drive from where I live. You will find a listing including the email addresses of all the dealers. Grab all the email addresses create a list then do a mass email telling them what you are looking for. Some will respond offering deals on new motors too. I had 2 used motor options in 24 hours and 3 sets of controls available all with-in a days drive. The dealer I bought from was 300 miles from home, he loaded the crated motor into my truck and a local marine shop did the install for a very reasonable price. We could have not been happier with the outcome.

Good Luck,
Kevin

Your local Honda dealer will stick it to you good when he finds out Ed's shipped the motor . Ed's is a low to no service company that has broken every rule they can regarding dealer agreements . Yamaha has dumped them ,Suzuki has limited them ,BRP has dumped them etc and Honda is jusy waiting to cathe em ....
Do a little research and you will find out that they are the lowest of the low .

Just my 02 cents on buying things from Ed's superstore in Virginia. I used to belong to a Carolina Skiff board and almost everyone that had bought things from Ed's as best as I can remember was either unsatisfied or extremely unhappy with service etc. Make sure you can get the deal in writing especially as you are shipping it so far.......................
