No warning shot across the bow?

I appreciate the opinions and views brought to this site by all my fellow Brats whether they coincide with my beliefs or not. I can also appreciate the thankless work that the moderators do trying to keep all our 6,000 members happy.

One of my favorite, long running threads was recently locked. For inappropriate content? (not for me to decide) In another thread I recently enjoyed reading "C Brat Name" I learned that this site was started to expand the content allowed in the forums. This thread was posted in the "that's life" section - only viewable by members - which if I recall correctly when I joined must be over 18.

After 8 years, 1,000 posts and almost 40,000 views I think the author - who is also one of our original charter members and a valued contributor to the forums deserved the courtesy of a warning shot across the bow before being deep sixed. Even pirates get that don't they?

OK that's my 2 cents - now back to happy boat talk. :thup :D

Regards, Rob

Last time I looked nothing was deep sixed, figuratively or otherwise. Every joke is still there. The charter member and I have been friends for a lot of years and we took our "shots" at each other via PM. We're still friends, by the way.

If anyone wants another joke thread, then fire one up. The old one is going to slip into obscurity.

I have to admit that I was not surprised, but then I tend to be a bit more conservative than some. I have really enjoyed the humor thread, but liked the clean, family style humor. When it turned (and it was not just one poster), I went back to the thread less often. Sorry I didn't just mention something on the thread, because I thought about it. Just liked the idea of having the clean, family humor I could share at work or with friends.

I do appreciate the efforts Mike and Bill put in to keep this place happy. They do a great job and there are folks here that I count as close as family and that would not have been possible without the C-Brat site and the two guys who make it possible.

Thanks to both. I like the rule and I do try.

I am confused--I don't see any member banned or posts deleted. I may have missed something. Was a joke removed? What type of warning should be given? Should a warning be open?

In the daily laughs, many of the jokes are ones which might be told by good ole boys drinking beer and sitting around the campfire. I rarely find anything offensive--certainly a bit off color language, which I might not appreciate from my grandchildren--or even jokes which might not be appropriate for them. But my grandchildren are not reading the thread.

I think the moderators do a fantastic job. I think that they do the right thing if a complaint is given to them, and handle that by PM. This is why this list server is one of the best run of the boating threads!

It is up to every member to think out a joke, or any other post if it might be offensive, and use discretion. When Mike first set up this forum part of his message was:
The C-Brat community has become so much more than just a bunch of boaters. Having experienced first hand the value of friendships made through this group, I feel it is healthy for the soul and good for the world to encourage those who wish to discover it for themselves to take the time to do so. Many of us share things on the General discussion board - and there is nothing wrong with that - but many more may feel it is not appropriate to stray too far away from the connection with C-Dorys. We have all been taught while growing up that we need to stay focused and on topic. Well, we are all grown up now, so I think we are capable of handling this.

Bob,

The daily laugh thread got locked. Probably due to a complaint (or more) about the bawdy nature of some of the jokes that were posted there. I have to admit, I found many funny but, while I never complained, I also felt like some jokes were a bit out of line for a "family" site and might make some (especially women) on the site feel uncomfortable. So locking the thread seems like a completely reasonable thing to do.

As for the need for a "warning shot across the bow"... without knowing anything about what actually took place, I'd bet some private messages (PMs) were exchanged between the admins and other parties that served a similar purpose. It's answering PMs about complaints and while simultaneously attempting exercise the minimal control over the site content that I know takes a toll on Bill and Mike. I never question their approach because time has told me they are extremely reasonable and tolerant guys who often deal with a bunch of stuff "behind the scenes" and I'm damn happy they do it.

Thanks Roger, I missed that the thread was "locked" since I didn't try to post on it. The jokes are still there. So if someone wants to put out "joke of the day", is that going to be locked also? (I doubt it).

I enjoy the jokes--and they are different than ones I normal get thru e-mail. Here we have the choice of looking at the thread or not. If a person does not want to read the jokes, then he just does not click on the link.

While I agree with that in principle. However,
1) The member (he or she) may not know they don't want to read the jokes until they click and it's only then that they find them offensive.
2) There may be an occasional child on the site. I wouldn't want a small child to read some of the jokes there (but of course they can find much worse stuff on the net).
3) Given that some members may find such material offensive it's probably better not to post such stuff here (even if I find almost all of it funny).

We might be making too big a deal of this. Nobody got banished, beaten or besmirched and that thread was going downhill fast.

Joe - please - start a new Daily Laugh thread. One joke is all it takes.

Glad to hear this--because every good family needs humor!

The members of the tribe/family are certainly mature enough to use discretion!

Glad to hear that.

Y'all (or is that "All Y'all") didn't know it but this thread has been providing the "Admirable" and myself with a fund of material to send daily "cheer-up" messages to a family member who has been struggling with heavy Chemo for the last several months.

So, our personal thanks to all who contributed.

The good news is that it is working :-) and we may be able to get him on one of his bucket list land yacht trips this fall to Zion and Brice.

Mike - thanks for the response. Glad to hear everybody's still friends. Guess I misinterpreted some of the comments in "lexophile". And thanks again for all the work you do for this site.

Harvey - ditto on your second paragraph. I've never even met a real live C Brat and I think of them as my friends. I guess that's why I get upset when I think one of them might be feeling hurt.

Bob - thanks for digging into the archives and sharing the quote. I've enjoyed learning a bit about our history the last couple of weeks.

Roger - agreed - a great site - run by great guys! :D

Merv - they say laughter is the best medicine!! I've been guilty of sharing some of the jokes myself!! :)

Bill - appreciated the pm. I see a "daily laugh 2" thread has been started. Many thanks for your work keeping this site going.

Regards, Rob

OH OH - I've been bitten by the double post bug!! :o

(Been busy with my hobby business and other matters this afternoon.)

To all:

Thanks for all the understanding and support!

Yes, we're all still friends and at ease around the C-Brat Circle.

I really was not particularly upset by the closing of the Daily Laugh thread, and knew we were walking a tight line and occasionally falling of or over the line into the abyss.

Walking a line like that is always difficult, especially in light of the great range of opinions on where the line should be.

I guess we'll just have to have the new Daily Laugh 2 thread be the Nicer and Cleaner Daily Laugh 2.

And please, don't

1. be afraid to say something if you feel it's going overboard, and,

2. remember you don't have to read it if you know it will offend you.

Thanks, Mike and Bill, it's been a great 10 years or so!

Joe. :teeth :thup

The Good News, we all are still friends, there's still going to be a humor site, the rules are simple "Just Be Nice"

and

Mike and Bill are still the best guys on the internet PERIOD

HAVE A GREAT DAY,

Harvey
