Nordic Tug furloughs workforce

Our local paper (Skagit Herald) reported that Nordic Tug was furloughing most of its employees due to slow sales. I can't say I am surprised.

nordic tug is one sweet vessel, just priced to high, like so many other boat manufacturers. the market will always dictate pricing. perhaps obama will bail them out and then take over management of the company.

Could be...it worked for GM.

If the government runs it, they'll probably float upside down... :cry

And if you think they're expensive now......... :crook

Sad. Another example of a quality manufacturer who can't make a go of it in today's economy. It, again, makes one marvel at the manufacturers who are selling boats... like Ranger Tugs. Trailerable, well-built, and responsive to their customers and the buying public.

Nordic had recently "re-introduced" the 26. Not soon enough, apparently.

I am sorry to hear this news about Nordic. However, it makes me even more appreciative of the attributes of our CD-25.

When they discontinued the 26' and moved up into the 40's I knew there would be trouble. They got behind on the economic curve and are paying for it.

I don't understand this comment- can you explain?

If they float at all.

Mark and Patrick, let's keep the politics out of this. Thanks, Steve

Don't leave Charlie out now...

Ranger has resisted making anything larger than 29'. Probably a good choice. They have a 21EC, 25, 25SC, 27 and 29 now (did I leave anything out?) A great lineup and seem to be selling well. Wish we had Jeff Messmer back with the C-Dory line, he knew how to sell boats and how to treat customers.

My point was that they got into the market with that 26'. It was really popular and was a size and at a price that many people could afford. Then these last few years they abandoned the 26' and started getting larger, and larger, impacting the number of people that could afford to purchase and maintain, and moor. It was probably working okay until the bubble burst and they got caught with a lot of their new almost-mega yachts. That end of the market is really suffering as people are learning to return to a less consumptive lifestyle. All the while the used 26's are still selling, and at prices that are near their new price of 20 years ago. Not a great investment financially but way better than purchasing a new 42' or 54' right now.

I think that parallels the general movement of the boating market to the big boats, abandoning the smaller boats. Just look at Passagemaker magazine over the years. It started out being a larger-boat version of the late, lamented Small Boat Journal but now focuses predominantly on the boats over ~$750K, because that is where the ad dollars are coming from. Gotta think that the lower end was not as profitable, even with the fewer units being sold on the higher end. Now, hopefully -- as you mention -- we can move toward a less consumptive lifestyle, and with it bring back an emphasis on the smaller boats.

The main problem for any boat builder these days Is that people can't use their homes as ATM machines A lot of the Planes ,RV's and Boats were bought with 2nd mortgages . The only builders that are not affected are the Mega Yahts and some of the smart builders that have not priced themselves out of the market (Ranger Tugs )

The trouble with Nordic , Brunswick , Genmar, etc etc etc. You fill in the company .Is the House ATM is banckrupt and the BABY BOOMERS have Lost their cash machine . A lot of people got caught up in getting the next size up supersize me with Boats ,cars,Houses , you name it .

I for one was very suprized when C-dory got sold a few times I thought they had the right niche Boat which I think they still do if they don't get carried away with their prices .
