Official launch date for the Marinaut

Maybe my wife will be able to safely see over the bow with the forward tank. That plus putting the bow four feet further from the point of propulsion should help keep it down.

Now, back to that Marinaut 215 launch... Wish I could be there.

On my 23 Venture I removed the 20 gallon water tank under the Port seat and put a 30 gallon tank under the V berth. I was very worried about too much weight forward also. The end result is a better trimmed boat that rides better. One of the best improvements I've made to my boat.

I too apologize for 'highjacking' the thread. My CC23 was built with the water tank in the bow (on centerline just forward of the porta-potty). I have seen other (earlier?) CC23s with the water tank in the aft/port dinette seat like Bill's before he moved it forward. So...I would echo what Dave and Bill are saying about putting the water tank forward.

We are still scheduled for a launch date at the end of April but that is provided we get our windows by the 12th of April.

Looking good Dave - I like the comment on the web site about the launch date that says "The only thing that can delay it are our windows which are suppose to be ready by the 12th of April." The only thing? What about the unexpected? :wink: Hopefully it's all "smooth sailing" (or "smooth motoring") for you between now and the end of April. I really like the looks of this boat and the many clever design features. But I'm holding out for the 29. :lol:
 
I'm a little late to this discussion but I do have some input which I hope will be edifying. I own a 21' Campion Explorer with the Alaska Bulkhead, powered by a Volvo I/O. There is much I like about my boat, in particular it's speed, quietness, and handling in the rough seas. However, what I don't like is the cramp v-berth for sleeping (I'm 6'0") and the limited cockpit space, due to the I/O.

I've strongly considered the Venture 23 to be the replacement, due to it's finish, interior room, and hull configuration.

Those plans may become shelved. The 7' v-berth configuration is absolute genius!! Also, it appears the 215 has a similar hull to the Venture 23. Correct? Is it able to go 12 knots while keeping the bow down? I also like the 1st mate chair design with the swivel!

Other questions...

1. Is the interior going to be "finished, " i.e. wife friendly.

2. Chemical toilet. Please describe.

3. Price without power?

Well done Mr. Toland. You're building the most ingenious boat I've seen in years. I can't wait to see it in person.

Greg – you are never too late.

To answer your questions;

1. The hull is very similar to the venture 23. A little more outward curve at the bow to direct more spray away from the boat and a little less forward slope to the point of the bow. (a longer waterline proportionately for the boat)

2. We have not water tested the boat, but with the saddle fuel tanks, the water tank in the bow and most weight shifted forward, the boat should have a flatter running & planning configuration than the C-Dory or Venture boats. Our plan is to have it perform better than a C-Dory does with trim tabs and or a Permatrim without either having to be on the Marinaut.

3. There will be different cabin and deck finishes available. From plain for the do it yourself person to nicely finished for the person that wants a finished boat.

4. Chemical toilet aka as a porti-potty. Ben does not like me to use the term “porti-potty” in describing the porti-potty aka as a "chemical toilet".

5. All I can say about price is, it will be very competitive with the other boats in its class. A lot of things are costing us a lot more than anticipated but at the same time we have been able to get some good deals on other items because of the state of the economy.

Thanks for your reply, Dave. Is there a chance you'll be swinging it on by Anacortes during TrawlerFest, May 20-23. I'll be there, hoping to sell my 27' Devlin.

Another question. Are you concerned about the width of the V-berth. I read somewhere that two adults are most comfortable with the space of 27" each. Your berth is only 48". That's a little cozy for two adults.

Is the Venture 23 a "wet" boat? I've ridden in a 22' in the chop. I didn't notice it to be wet....just noisy. How is the noise factor is the Marinaut?

Greg – no promises but I will try. If I do, it most likely will only be for a couple of days between the 21st and the 23rd Things are so hectic at this point, my only focus is to have the boat finished enough to make the Friday Harbor CBGT. If for some reason I don’t make it, you are welcome to stop in Olympia on your way back to Kalama and take the boat for a test cruise.

Just checked here and the tolandmarine web site hoping for a launch notice today. I really need a bit of a road trip so was hoping for a notice for today. Bet you are only about 10 times more anxious, (or 100 Xs) than the rest of us.

As most of you know we are running behind schedule with the launch of our boat. I did update our web site the 26th with the latest photos and info. Get to the photos from this page.

I am really sorry I missed the Friday Harbor Get Together and have been under a lot of pressure to have the boat ready for the Bellingham CBGT the 16th through the 18th of June. What a relief when I realized it is in July. I can make that date.

The boat is really looking good. Even though it is a prototype we keep making small changes to it and the only thing we have not decided on is how to finish the fuel tanks. We have gone from coating them with a truck bed-liner to paint to just polishing them to bright (not too bright) shine.

I like the table without a leg, the windows and the dark hull. Very impressive.
 
Looks good, Dave. And I have no doubt that the completion time will work out to be exactly when the boat is done. :wink: As long as that first boat isn't "promised" to someone with an exact date, there's only the pressure you put on yourself. Many of us understand those "self-imposed" deadlines (I lived by them in our business).

We appreciate your willingness to share this process with us. We wish you much success with this project.

That boat looks great, incorporating a lot of novel ideas and correcting a lot of shortcomings of the existing boats enjoyed by the C-Brats.

Have folks started bothering you with questions about prices and ordering/delivery times yet?

Jim – you are right, most pressure is self imposed. The first boat will not be for sale. We need something to show people.

Joe – we get lots of questions about price. Two years ago our goal was to price the boat in the upper thirty thousand dollars range without engine or trailer. It now looks like it will be three to four thousand dollars more than that. Won’t know for sure until I get a final price from all our vendors. Even at this, there are seven people that have asked if they can put a deposit down for a boat. I would like to take their money but until the first boat is finished and tested, I won’t take any orders or deposits. We will have a base price for the boat similar to the one we are building, then there will be additional options available or a person can order it with many items left off at a reduced price, so they can finish it to their liking.

I am working on that list now and a manual with a wiring schematic for the boat.
