Oh, No No No, David - NOT a "Vacation"!

This morning on our 2 meter ham net, David said he is headed over to Hawaii for a "vacation." Toni or Russ, do you care to explain this one to David, who like you, is retired? :lol:
 
Pat-Even when retired, if you're gone on garbage day you are on vacation. Not to worry, you'll catch on.
 
I also said I was glad it was Friday and was looking forward to the week-end off from all the activities of the week.
 
I have been retired for 10 years, Susan has only been retired one year....now the only one around the house with a job is the dog...she works on Fridays in a "memory unit" at a care home near us.....

I still have to bathe her and comb her out before she can go...so I guess it never ends...

Pat, to expand on Marty's comment a bit. When you're retired, you refer to happenings like garbage day as the "Big Event". It's a lot of work preparing for these kinds of things. A person needs a break every now and then. For example, I have had to go birding four times this week. Diana has suggested that I take the weekend off and go to the beach. I am feeling a bit worn, so I think I will take her advice.

Today is clean the gutters day but, since it's snowing in NJ I think I'll have to watch C-Span. Ah yes lunch, I think I have a coupon for Jersey Mikes....

Definitions of vacation on the Web:

leisure time away from work devoted to rest or pleasure; "we get two weeks of vacation every summer"; "we took a short holiday in Puerto Rico"

The key concept is that a vacation is "time away from work." If you are retired, by definition, you no longer "work." You may volunteer, you may be busier than you have ever been, but you are no longer "working." You may go on a trip, a cruise, have an adventure, and so forth, but the ONE thing you cannot do, ever, is take a "vacation." That is reserved for us poor folk who are not yet retired!
 
Pat-If I may quote the great teacher himself-"Lamar, you've simply got your facts wrong". Now were was I? Oh yes, Sunday the ribs are great at the Jumbo Buffet in Marysville.
 
Ah, Pat... when one is retired, anything you do for pleasure that is out of your normal routine is considered "vacation." So, if you sell the house, buy an RV, and travel with your RV and/or boat, that is your routine. If you get on a plane and fly to Hawaii, that is a vacation.

We have no "garbage day" here (we take our trash to central located dumpsters any ol' time we want), so we don't have that event to look forward to. When we're home, my daily routine is: drive the boat, go watch dolphins, maybe toss out the anchor and take a nap. Sub-routines are: ride bicycles, ride the motorcycle, go out for lunch, walk the beach. When we leave with the boat or the RV, that particular trip becomes our routine. So, in order to get a "vacation", we have to really alter our routine. So far, since we retired, we have had damn little vacation time. Fortunately, you don't have to put in for it or try to schedule around someone else. Pluses and minuses, my friend.

As the others have said, you'll catch on once you're into it. We're still working out all the details... and considering the next non-routine event.

Pat- I am very glad that you started this thread about Garbage Day. I have a problem and perhaps someone out there can help me. As you may know, our garbage day is on Thursday and I put it out (after 4pm) on Wednesday. I have 3 cans, each a different color and size. I have no idea why. My problem is this. When I pick Lizzie up at the school bus on Monday, I also put her family's garbage out. Their garbage day is on Tuesday. They too have three cans, a blue one, a brown one, and a grey one. Lizzie's mom, Annie the doctor, has three little garbage cans in her kichen, a blue one, a brown one, and a grey one. She, Annie the doctor, has left me a crayon drawing showing the little cans with arrows pointing to the big cans of the same color. What does all this mean?

Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, living in Miami , are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass a drugstore.. Jacob suggests they go in.


Jacob addresses the man behind the counter:

"Are you the owner?"

The pharmacist answers, "Yes."

Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?"

Actually right now we are not on vacation in Lahaina, Maui. We have been here all week watching whales and touring the island. Today we go back to Oahu to spend the weekend at a friends house in Kailua, sorry to miss David and Kate. We could have had a great discussion on the drawbacks of not being able to take vacations anymore....

I've got a solution for your problem, spend more time on C-Brats and less time watching C-Span.
 
Good advice. My wife and kids say the same thing. C-Brats have put a limit on my time, sort of like the editing thing, so I'm watching old episodes of MadMen in between. Just a few more weeks and I can put the old Volvo back on insurance and tow the boat out, if the ground dries up enough.

Yeah, but they don't have really good beer...not for want of trying though. Maybe the Wicked Rack and Columbia will kiss and make up, so you all can get the good beer there along with the fine food...
