Probably the 382 was the 382nd by the manufacturer who used the CDO initials. (certainly not for the year 05).

Just as trivia: I think it is the 382nd since they "started over" after they got to 999. The reason I say that is that my boat is a very low hull number (under 10), and yet it was not made until a year or so after they started using CDO (and were obviously building more than nine boats in that time period).

As further "evidence," I looked on the boats list here at C-Brats and was able to find another 22 that was made a month or so before mine (but also a CDO HIN) and it was something like 995. So it looks like the Tolands got up into maybe the high 800's or so, then when they went from DOR (Tolands) to CDO (next owners in Kent) they just kept on going sequentially, but then a year or so later (late 2001) they got to 999 and there is not room for a fourth digit, so they started again at 001 (or 000?) in late 2001. My boat came along very shortly after the "rollover" and the hull was laid in late 2001 for a 2002 model.

The HIN is CDO22382F505 I am assuming that means 22 foot cdory being the 382 one built (in that year?) F (don't know what f means) and 505 I guess says they started building it in May of 05.

Probably the 382 was the 382nd by the manufacturer who used the CDO initials. (certainly not for the year 05). The F stands for June, which is when the boat was started. 05 is the model year. If it had been in July, most likely it would have been 06. (and an 06 model)

Congratulations--and too bad it was such an issue with the trailer!
Well the title does say it is a 2006 but the HIN seems to argue that. Could it have to do when it was sold?

Also while cleaning I found the original owners state marine board card on the boat. The second owner never moved it from its place. It shows the original owners bought the boat in Oregon.

So the boat was started or built and sold in 05 but was sold as an 06. Curious.

Plus I got all the original manuals all for the boat the engines and all equipment, last but not least I got the shop manual for the Honda 40s.

In addition I have a 2005/06 color brochure for the entire line which shows them in Auburn.

The boat was sold at Sportcraft Marina on the Willamette River. In Oregon City.

The most interesting thing is I have the original manual which shows a date of sale as 7/1/05 yet they still call it an 06

Oh this is so much fun.

It is likely that C dory went to model year 06 in june in their sales literature. So technically it would be an 06 by the factory reckoning. Interesting as my HIN is: CDO22335j506. Your boat is 382, yet made before my boat, which was started in Oct 05….So if all of our HIN numbers are correct, this is a bit of a mystery. I have seen a few close numbers which had out of sequence build dates--and this was explained by a hull number being assigned by order sequence, rather than by start date. Of course builders have done far more strange things!

With a HIN ending in F505, I think "legally" there isn't really any way your boat can be anything but a 2005. A dealer may have called it a 2006, or an owner may have thought or "decided" it was a 2006 and registered it as such. I don't say this because it really makes any difference. Sort of like how you don't suddenly become anything more than one day older on your birthday. And it's not like the boat changed shape or design from 2005 to 2006.

But officially, here is how the last four digits work (which was explained above, I'm just saying it again, really).

The first pair of the last four digits signify when the hull was laid (in other words, when they started building the boat). The letter is the month (January is A, February is B, etc.), and the number is the year. So the hull was laid for your boat in June of 2005. The last pair of digits are the official model year. So the 05 says your boat is a 2005.

Not all boats have the same years in the two pairs of digits. For example, my boat's hull was laid at the end of 2001, but it is a 2002 model boat. So my HIN ends in something like L102 (i.e. December of 01 hull laid; 2002 model boat). Yours was begun in 2005 and is also a 2005 model year (which makes sense for a mid-year start).

Although there are usually a few "mysteries" such as Thataway points out, because boatbuilding is not always totally predictable (like, say, cars would be). Maybe they start a 22, but then five 25's get ordered, so the 22 is set aside and they build the 25's, then later get back to the 22. Or maybe they laid a green 22, but then orders come in for seven blue ones so it gets set aside. With the last four digits, you know (or at least there is some accountability presuming no hijinks) that you don't have a boat that was begun five years ago and just sat around (no idea how they keep those records though).

Maybe more than you wanted to know, but hey, always fun to talk about your new boat, right? :D

Well, those pictures look good. Where are you going to keep the boat, RVYC? We'll be coming by Nanimo some thyme in August so if you're up there we'll say hello. You may not think that's close to Victoria, but it is from whence we come.

I notice that you have a Harley. I assume you prefer that to a motorcycle. Anyway, i have 2 ea KTM's, both of which I can pick up. Yes I used to crash a lot.

No I am going to keep the boat at home where she is now in the driveway. I will most likely launch at RVYC most often unless I am going further a field.

PS: Harleys are real motorcycles, everything else is a toy, a pretender, or a death machine.

Well, I must admit while I own (1/2 interest) a C-Dory, I've never owned a Harley, though I rode one once (~1955.) Interesting experience. I've owned a couple of Indians.

Now Harleys are know as a big bad massive monster, but that wasn't always so. Here's an interesting article on how Harley ended up at where they are now: Ghosts-of-Harleys-Past. And actually, some of the overseas cruisers weigh more than Harleys these days.

The nice thing about bikes is that we all get to pick our own and then discuss, etc. And the real test is the enjoyment of just riding.

Boris

I tend to agree with you, Boris. I've owned both a Harley and a couple of Hondas, and they each seemed "real" to me and I enjoyed riding all three of them.

Well I too have had and enjoyed a Honda 500 & 750 and a Suzuki a Kawasaki a Bonneville 650 chopper and other bikes but his comment was:

"I notice that you have a Harley. I assume you prefer that to a motorcycle" you read that how ever you want.

But I don't think a Honda is somehow a motorcycle and a Harley is somehow not. Most people have no idea about todays Harleys. They are not your fathers bikes. They are as well built if not better built than all the other bikes on the market today.

Oops, sorry! I thought that was just your signature line, and somehow missed what you were responding to :embarrased I had an early 70's Harley, which were supposedly not so great (AMF), but I loved mine. Then I liked my Hondas too, and I think it would be fun to have an old Trail 90 now just for kicking around.

Lets not lump all Harleys into one basket ..... there are many models of them and they are all motorcycles . I myself have been on many different types / brands of motorcycles , and motorcycles much as many other hobbies have one thing in common there is someone else out there that shares yer passion . Just as with boats each of us has our own likes and dislikes single -v - twins , angler - v - cruiser , 16 - v - a tomcat .... ect. ect. I have learned over the years that I prefer to ride , own Harleys , at the same time I don't bash or put down any other brand or type of bike , as we all have the same thing in common , the love to ride . Motorcycles just as with boats , each of us adds the things we like to them . No two are ever a like . They are part of who we are , we make them our own , no matter if its our boat or if its our motorcycle no one likes to hear any one say anything bad about our pride and joy . I all ways say that no ones bike / boat is better or nicer than mine ..... what is it that makes mine better ? My name is on the tittle.

Please don't take my PS comments as that I only think Harleys are good or I am down on other machines I love all bikes. I was responding to his statement
I notice that you have a Harley. I assume you prefer that to a motorcycle
My PS was trying to say that there are a lot of kiddy bikes there are a lot of foreign bikes that copy the Harley look and feel and there are a lot of crotch rockets that are great bikes but I think death machines unless your don't ride them to their purpose which is really to be on a track.

But it is like football some one takes a swing and the guy who reacts gets the penalty. When the comment was made that Harleys weren't motorcycles I should have said nothing. My bad.

Oh no its all good ... not your bad . I was just pointing out that there are all kinds of motorcycles , just as there are all types of boats , each model and or make is not for everyone . But we all share a passion for what ever hobby it is that we indulge in .

I love that line about harleys vs motorcycles. Once in Pensylvania, we stopped by the Harley factory. Closed, but we went into a bar next to it to get dinner. I used that line to the bikies inside. The other 3 people in the group headed for the door, but I got a cheer. It's a great fun line, love it.

I feel that I've posted some worthwhile blogs; informative, well written, provided more knowledge, etc. and this throwaway line gets more response. I feel discouraged.

And now harley has created this great mystique which is OK by me. Enjoy whatever you ride.

Ok over the last 2 days I have put my girl on the Hard :P

During the process I learned that the original gel coat has been covered by at least one or more coats of an epoxy barrier coat, but some idiot in the past allowed barnacle growth which was removed and painted over. That has all been sanded and scraped back

She has then had her bottom painted with 2 coats of Micron CSC. Her top sides have been polished with an anti oxidation compound and then followed with a marine wax.

If you would like to see before and after pictures there is a new album of pictures at my C-Hawk picture site.

Looking great! I thought this was going to take you two weeks--not two days! Setting some new records on restoration / inspiration!

Must be nice to have a YC with a hoist, and a sailboat trailer, so you can work standing up!
