Old Gas

Well here is the final report on my possibly incorrect winter lay up. We have a Honda 90 2005

We had a carb problem the end of last season. Turned out dirt-aluminum chips in the carbs. Must have been from new but took a long time to cause a problem. When it happened last fall I thought it was due to E-Gas. Changed all filters ect, found no water or problems so it went to the dealer and they found the chips.

At this point the tanks were about 1/4 full. I have been useing Starthon every time we fuel. I read an article about storage that said not to fill up, because the fuel will go bad any way. I added a little more Starthon and ran it thru with the ear muffs and did not run the carbs empty.

After a long winter storage I ran the boat about one hour and all seemed OK. Today I added about 15 gals split between the tanks and went out for a navigation contest. After about 3 hours of rocking and rolling at six knots it ran up to 5800 with 4 people on board and never missed a beat.

I don't know if I got lucky or that Starthon really works. I will keep useing it that is for sure.

I am using both startron and StaBil. I tend to run the fuel out of carbs if storing the engine for a long time. I am not sure what was done with the Honda 130--but it had StaBil in the fuel which was at least 18 months old. We diluted it 50/50 and it ran fine--started right up. We ran the rest of the fuel out in the Tom Cat and our cars (100 gallons total) with no problems.

With my surgery coming up, all vehicles/boats we will not use in the next few months, we have filled the tanks up and added Startron and StaBil.
