Ole and Charlie's Marina (Not a Lena and Ole Joke - I Hope)

Tried this in the Indian Cove thread, no responses, so I'll throw it out again in its own thread.

Looking for a place to launch for the South Sound gathering at Indian Cove, I came across a place in Tacoma called - I kid you not - "Ole and Charlie's Marina," with supposedly 24/7 self-launching facilities. Anybody know about this place? I don't want to go down there and find out it is two tire tracks into a marsh with a fee drop box...but if it is a decent launch, it looks like a good jumping off spot for the South Sound...any info would be appreciated!

Hi Pat,

Sorry I can't give you info on Ole and Charlie's. Another option would be Pt Defiance. It looks pretty nice since the renovations last season. 11 bucks and 8 lanes to choose from. See ya soon.

Yeah, I saw that too. This looks like it could be a great jumping off point for the South Sound - I just emailed them for more info, no way I am going to do a self-service sling! But if they have a ramp and adequate parking, this would be a great find!

I just did a Google search on it and found several sites of info. They had a fire there Feb 16, 2008.

Yeah, is that what is called Boathouse Marina Point? I suppose it wouldn't be too crowded the first week in March...

Yeah, its called the Pt Defiance Boathouse Marina. There should only be a few fishermen using the launch this early in March. They have an after hours dropbox and somebody at the ramp to take your money during the day.

Goodmoring All -

The Viking Lady's home base is at Ole & Charlie's for the past couple of years as it's just down from our home. The marina does NOT have a ramp but two slings are available and the larger one handles the 25 just fine. The marina has a well lighted secured fenced area and two or three of the staff live on-site and 24 hour security is provided. We have never had a loss or any problems and enjoy the feeling that our property is being taken care of appropriately.

While access is available 24/7 by those having lock combinations as a guest I don't think this would be the case so you should call for hours or to make any special arrangements. I believe they are open 8 to 5 at this time of the year. I do not know the sling fee but would guess it's c. $20 - $30 in and out (round trip), but if that would include secured parking it would be a reasonably good deal. (I ALWAYS get a little anxious when there's too much air under the Lady and the guys that run the slings take speciall care of her)

The closest nearby public ramps I believe are at Pt Defiance, Redondo Beach, or Gig Harbor. I have been to the ramp at University Place (just below the Tacoma Bridge) and would not consider this site to launch the Viking Lady and I do not have any knowledge of security at the site. If you are interested in this site suggest you call the marina office - (http://narrowsmarina.com/marina-amenities.html)

Hope this helps. Let us know if we can help in any way.

Thanks, Michelle and Ron - I was just curious about the 24/7 self-service statement on the web site. I have no problem with, say, $25 for a sling in-out. I emailed them for their rates, and will post whatever I find out. I would never try a self-service sling, period. If they have a reasonable fee, we'll give this place a try, otherwise we'll go to Point Defiance.

Ron,

Good to see you on the site. The Viking Lady is the C-Dory that was in the full page ad a while back, with the Photoshop repower I believe. Thanks for the info and hope to see you and Michelle on the water sometime.

Bon Voyage,

We kept C-Dawg just down the road at Tyee Marina and used Ole's several times. If I remember correctly the price was $35 one way and $50 for round trip as long as it was within 7 days.

Much more cost efficient to use Point Defiance. Launch fee there is $11 or $13 now, I believe.
