Our favorite cruising mods, 2026

Galley Extension board: Underway, this lives under the Nav seat cushion, cut so that it doesn’t interfere with the snaps which keep it in place when underway (roughly 29.5 x 24” birch with Gloss varnish). I didn’t want to screw it into the teak trim so attached a trim piece to that for the screw holes, the forward section rests on the back of the helm seat when it’s folded down. Put the wheel in the lowest position for the most usable space. The two wood condiment boxes are from Walmart ($14). A Walmart cutting board fits over the sink; two bolts ensure it can’t dislodge when underway and again adds galley space. We took out the butane stove and found two clear plastic kitchen bins which hang down from the edges into that cut-out with yet another cover over them, which the Medium size Breville toaster oven resides on. We take that down when underway. Credit to Ranger Tug. There is no honor among idea thieves.

Deckadence marine carpet: Allows dirt sand etc to flow through, but stays nice and clean and soft on bare feet on top. If you fall on it, less likely to break your hip. Stuff both cabin and cockpit sections into a commercial HD washing machine with Clorox and a Tide pod and hot water after every six week cruise. Expensive, but lasts forever. After ten years, both are shrinking an inch around the edges…could it be the HOT water?

Twin 12 inch Garmin MFD displays; hers on a pivoting RAM mount that swings out of the way for berth entry. Either of us can display exactly what we want at any time. We like cartography, AIS and radar targets on mine; CHIRP/SONAR, engine and navigation data on hers. We have yet to hear of any other 26 foot trailer boat with twin 12 inch displays, but we like it, we can afford it, and therefore we should have it.

Class B+ send/receive black box AIS: Our old Garmin AIS 600 unit would not reliably display the target vessel name or data at closing speeds over 25 MPH, which apply to faster C-Dorys but not many. We often cruise at over 25-30 MPH and the approaching 40-barge towboat at 8 MPH, so we need it. You might not.

TST trailer tire monitoring system: Super reliable, pro-trucker oriented US based company with US tech support monitors up to 22 tires, which might be more than you currently have on your trailer. Saved our bacon yet again with an instant alarm when we had a non-structural, non-catastrophic flat on I-75 returning from the Hontoon Hoot. About five seconds after the alarm, Eileen noted the port rear PSI had dropped from 110 to 60, then over the next five seconds to 30, then to zero. Oddly, there was absolutely no sway, pulling or any sign to me of anything amiss. However, another five minutes would have melted some bearings etc.
