Paint Removal

Hi All,
We are new members, having recently made the move from Sailboats to a C-Dory 22 Cruiser, 2001 model. We are on Lake Norman, near Charlotte, NC and plan to also use ours on the NC coast. No pictures as yet. Our boat came from coastal Va, and needs a good cleaning and fuel polishing first. Anyone have any good methods for removal of the old boat name painted on? My surveyor told me to use easy-off oven cleaner, but I wouldn't mind a second opinion on that!
Thanks,

Hi Hugh and Jennifer

Welcome, it would be interesting to know how many other C-Brats are former sailors, Kathie and I are and I know quite a few others on the site have mentioned a rag boat background. I have used a product called Citristrip paint and varnish stripping gel for paint removal. It does not have as harsh a chemical make up as some other strippers, it's safe to use indoors and does not have harsh fumes. Its available at Home Depot, Lowes and I am sure other hardware/paint stores. I did not have any problems using in on fiberglass. I was careful using it, didn't apply it too thick or leave it on an extended amount of time. If you use it with a scrapper of some type be careful not to scratch your gel coat. I used a plastic scrapper after the Citristrip softened the paint.

Check out the Caroline Loop get together this May, not too far for you and last time I checked there were 8 C-Dory's signed up for it.

Enjoy your boat!

Easy Off is often used for paint removal. You will have to buff it out, there may be some difference in surface, but it will bleach out in short time. Most of use get vinly letters for the new name.

Many of the C Dory owners were sailors. We have about 60 years of sailing and around 200,000 offshore miles. both racing and cruisng.

I have used the EZ Off oven cleaner to great success. I was worried when it left a yellowed coloring to the gel coat, but that disappeared overnight.
