Port Alberni Launch/parking

We are headed up next week to Barkely Sound Tuesday through Sunday and right now looking at China Creek for a launch point. Has anyone used this launch? Is the road paved all the way there from town? Does anyone recommend a better launch/parking point in town?

I figure its a bit further down the inlet so shortens the distance and also we want to avoid the short ocean exposure out of the Ucluelet because my sis is coming along with her family and open 18ft boat. The launch at Toquart is also not open this year so that is not an option.

Clutesi is a decent launch. Parking across street in lot has worked for us with no losses for about 12 years now. We motor down to Bamfield and stay there. It is a nice protected run, but can be a bit choppy at times -- also fog can be a problem. Three of our boats will be there during the same time period, although only 1 is a c-dory -- nameless, although blue stripe, and not a c-brat. I am now running an old Starcraft that I restored -- will be missing both Snoopy-C and C-Miner ( my previous c-dories).

I think we are leaning toward Clutesi now. The parking looks like the paved area next to the launch but it sounds like that may be only day use parking. Launching there lengthens the run by a few miles but at least the boats won't be grit covered.

Thanks for the info,

Greg

It has been a few years ago but we used the launch in town for pulling the boat out. We towed the whole way to Ucky on the way in and I think that is the best way to go. The road to ucky is just fine ( don't ask susan) and I am sure has gotten better since then. The run from there to bamfield is short and mostly protected ,depending on your route.

If you are really stuck, you could always talk to Port Boat House in Alberni. They have two fenced storeage yards right next to each other, one is nearly always empty. Keep your rig there. The boat ramp is right there as well. They may well look at your request kindly, they being the C-Dory dealer etc.

Martin.

We contacted Port Alberni Boat House when we spent a month in Barkley sound. We used their launch ramp with us on board and them driving my truck. They then took the truck and rinsed off the trailer and put it in their storage lot. Valet launching! We retrieved the boat by ourselves after getting the truck out of storage.

Minimal cost and well worth it.
