Power Inverter

Looking at the HFT 750 watt power inverter. Junk, dangerous or just cheap? Need to run a box fan for 8 hrs. without running the 2000i. Anybody?

Sounds simple enough. Check the power draw on that fan by looking at the specs or using a kill-a-watt type device. And I would do a test run for a couple of hours and check the inverter for excessive heat. If the fan draws over about 300watts on the setting you need, I would consider a bigger model inverter just to better handle the load and reduced heat at the inverter for more efficient running and longer life.

Looks just like the Black and Decker [one of the great Chinese tool names] 400W I have between the seats of my truck . A little weak but hasn't caught fire yet .Keeps the blackberry, the laptop and the Bluetooth charged . Hard wire it with big wire and solid terminal connections , not those weeny clamps . 12V cabin fans are very efficient, inverters are not .....

The 12v cabin fan doesn't drown out my snoring, according to the admiral.

Gee, I hope she doesn't pick up on that "drown" thing.

As for the power usage, the HFT thingy is plenty powerful for the box fan, just don't want anything to go boom.

If the 12V fan does the job inter terms of cooling and the only other requirement is to drown out the snoring noise, you might want to consider just buying a battery operated white noise generator. There's a ton of them out there - I'm pretty sure Radioshack sells one for about $20-30. Most have setting that let you pick the sound you like. Foam earplugs are another option. Neither of these two option will put a draw on your house battery.

OR - you could buy a covered life raft, a battery operated anchor light, a couple hundred foot of line and one of you could sleep in that.

Something else to ponder in this topic is the amount of house battery you will need to run "your" fan......for 8 hours....using any inverter. What is the power draw of your fan? Not all fans are created equal.

Now there is an invitation to get up on my soap box, no?

Snoring, Loud Yes, Irregular ?? Waking Gasping and/or choking?? ALL ARE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA.

OK enough of the shouting. Just trying to get over the loud roar of the snore.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea MAJOR Health hazard and comorbid health risk. Protecting the first mates sleep with with noise will not protect your health, (read:. Increased weight gain, diabetes, hearing loss, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrilation, and stroke and the possibility of sudden death, from fall asleep driving.)

There are several CPAP machines available which will make the same or less noise as a fan, use less power than the inverter, and run directly off the 12VDC plug. AND ALSO treat teh Sleep Apnea.

What to do: Go Directly past Go. Do not stop, and get to an Accredited Sleep Center, see a Board certified Sleep Specialist, Have the requisite Sleep Study done and Protect your health.

Now, don't ask me what I really think :wink I will get off the soap box, and wish you all a great nights sleep.

Some time back I spent National Sleep Week writing a thread about Sleep and its relationship to our health. I will see if I can find it and link it here somewhere.

Check the link for more and better details on sleep health.

OK guys, We don't want to miss the point entirely now do we?

What is the real purpose for that inverter? Here is a link to many more nights of peace and quiet and lifelong health benefits:

My own experience is that a little quiet machine, that uses less than 3 amps makes a world of difference, and runs straight off the 12VDC cig plug.

And to not take this thread off topic, any questions should be directed to the linked thread, or PM. Glad to help a fellow Brat.

02 Cool has some nice fans that "fit" better our smaller boat spaces. I still keep my old faithful 20" box fan on board, .....along with one of the smaller 02 Cool rechargeables. Now.... I have not seen that two tier misting 02 cool fan, but that would be great on hot summer days in the cockpit area.

I have one of those O2 Kool fans...and love it.....but what I did was do some research and find D cell batteries with a large recharge capacity...it takes 8 D cells....and I plug it into the 12 volt system of the boat....it recharges and is good for 18 hours of running at full speed before it needs a recharge.... It comes with a 110 volt transformer and a 12 volt cord...you can use either to recharge the D cells....
