Powering a 25'...

I have a Honda 135 which is the same as the 150 according to the owner manual except the 150 has variable valve timing and according to the spects get slightly better fuel economy, fuel used per hp hr.

I have a four blade Pro Pluse prop and maxed the adjustable pitch to 21. At 1400rpm I go 6.2 mph. To go fast, only across the big bend area of FL. where the intracoastal waterway ends and you go 80 miles and way off shore, I installed the original SS three blade prop. With this prop the engine has to turn 1800 rpm to go 6 mph. At 4200 rpm I go 20mph with the SS prop, which is as fast as I go.

I always thought if you are in a hurry you shouldn't be on a boat so 99.9% of the time I go 6mph.

It is easy to change the prop by getting my Walker Bay dinghy under the gear box so if anything drops it is in the dinghy.

For the sake of the discussion, I'll put in my 2 cents for the Mercury Verado 150.

My CD 25 had a single Mercury Verado 150, ~1.75 liter with a super-charger. It worked wonderfully with the boat. It had plenty of power when loaded to the gills, 2 adults, 2 little kids (and all their stuff) and a dingy on top. I never had a minutes worth of problems with it. Servicing it was also never an issue and the communication and follow-up by Mercury Marine was unlike anything I've every known. Their customer service was fantastic.

My current boat has two Mercury Verado 150s powering it. Bad news, I had some junk stuck in the thermostat on one, which made it overheat while on a trip. Good news, I was able to get the 5000 lb boat with 5 passengers on board (some rather large!) on plane with 1 motor and cruise at 13 knots all the way from Skagit Bay to Edmonds, WA, which is about 20+ miles.

On the CD 25, I was getting about 2.5 mpg.

The Verados have been around for a few years now. I can't say that I've heard any more negative news about them than I have for any other brand. I think all outboards are pretty darn solid now.

I've got a 135 on mine and am pleased with the performance. There are certainly a few time where I would like to go faster but on the whole, it works for me.

Thanks Chris. I still remember your kind offer to me and the Mrs for the ride/lunch. I may just call you. The last year has just whipped by with my elbow surgery recovery taking longer than expected, us enjoying our time w/ our new grandaughter and my wife's last year of RN school etc...The good news is she has graduated, taken & passed the NCLEX and is now working at Providence in Everett. Of course that hasn't slowed down the demands on our limited free time, but I hope to enjoy the summer this year and the water is calling to me. :smiled
