Pro-Release Downrigger Releases

Hi,

Just got the Cannons installed and headed out for a day on the Sound - did land a small King and had a great time. I purchased a set of Pro-Release releases and am confused.

Naturally, they came with no instructions except a picture of how to attach them to the downrigger ball.

How do you attach your line to the release. There is a pin which hinges out when you have a hook up but the line free-floats or slides freely behind the pin. After placing the ball to your desired depth, when you reel up to put a bend in your rod, you are pulling your flasher all the way to the ball... I ended up wrapping my line around the pin but surely there must be something I'm missing... Also, there is a wheel which turns to four selections? No clues.

You wrap the line around the pin six or seven times. The wheel has a S or T on it. One for salmon one for trout. Personally I don't like them. They are hard to break loose to check your bait. I use the ones from scotty. Brooks
 
I do not use the pro release but have seen them used and was given a demostration at the last puget sound anglers meeting ( hi my names tom and i fish... Hi tom) amitting you have a problen is the start. any way if you hold the release in your hand and point the little roller or stud towards the back of the boat and wrap the line from your rod around the stud 5 times going over the top and away from you, in other words counter clock wise and then closing the release the line it shouild stay in place. the nob is the tension adjuster and should be pointed down. this nob adjust how firmly the line is held. heres a web page with pictures that sayes it better then me. http://www.seaslakes.com/HowToUseDownri ... ps-181.asp
 
As far as I'm concerned, there is only one release worth having...the Scotty Power Grip. Nothing complicated...just a simple clamp that takes 2 seconds to hook up. They are inexpensive and they just plain work. We had a fantastic summer of fishing and Scotty products will never let you down.
 
10-4 on the Scotty releases. Cheap and reliable. The only problem I have experienced is if I accidentally get scent oil on the release pads. This usually happens by getting the stinky stuff on your fingers then grabbing the line and inserting line in the release. Once this happens, I don't mess around with it and put a different release on. I then clean up and dry the contaminated release.
 
I and a friend each bought a couple of sets of the Pro Releases at the Sportmans Show after seeing a demonstration. They looked like the real deal since I have had the same problem as True Story with false releases. I have used both the Scotty and Cannon type and have even bought the replacement pads for the Cannons. When using the Pro Release at the Bubble fishery (for the first time) my buddy had a real banger of a strike, lost the fish and when he retrieved his line it was broke off at the point of attachment. This was not a good situation and several bad words were spoken. He went back to the Scotty release and I checked my Pro Release several times to make sure it was working properly and sent it back down. About a half hour latter I had a good strike and guess what, same thing, broke my main line off at the release. I know these blankly, blank releases are suppose to work but they have not been used since in my boat. Back to the old reliables.
(Fishing Report) I was out fishing yesterday in the fog between Picnic Point and Possession Point. We got four nice silvers weighing 13,11,11,7, it was a good day, but you had to search for them.
