I'm thinking of changing my boat insurance over to Progressive (from BoatUS).

Does anyone have Progressive insurance? I understand a bit about Yacht Insurance vs boat insurance - but I feel that I have a boat and don't need the Yacht insurance.

I'd save about $150/yr - from $450/yr to $300/yr - (same agreed value).

Any thoughts? Good idea or bad idea?
 
I have had Progressive for over 10 years on a number of boats. From what I have seen it is good for what I want. I have had only one claim--and it involved a piece of hurricane debris caught in between the two props of a Bravo III outdrive, where the entire lower unit had to be replaced. No questions asked and the policy paid less deductable.

There are "offshore limits"--which can be extended for extra fee. For example if you want to go to the Bahamas, then it is extra. No extra cost for BC and AK.
 
I had progressive on our 22 when it was broken into twice. Both times the adjuster was quick and helpful. I had the check for the parts to be replaced, radar and gps/chart plotter, with the a day or two. My only problem was that when my rods where stolen they where not covered. only attached items were.
 
I have Progressive on both boats. Never had a claim. Price is good.
 
I added my boats to our Liberty Mutual home owners and auto insurance policy.
 
Progressive here and we got a further discount through USAA which applies to those in the military, retired, or children of those who served. I am the latter and our coverage is elevated yet still low priced.

I also have motorcycles covered through them with good rates.
 
Check with Geico save 15%, some say the owner of Progressive insurance is trying to destroy America. I currently have Progressive and have had them for three years,never a claim. but we will be switching to Boat Us which seems to work harder for boaters in general pertaining to government policies which effect boaters in general. Plus on the water towing insurance if you think that might be something you are interested in. I know the old salts don't use it but for us scaredy cats it's good to have if the unthinkable occurs.

Have Progressive on cars and boats (now TuCats!! plus a sailboat :roll:) No boat claims but had a car claim this past winter, instant payment, no hassles. Progressive also has on the water towing coverage. Bob Austin is right however, (as usual) about offshore stuff. More $ for over 75 miles, I think.

Their website is very easy to navigate. Good for us!!

Funny - I was just about to post an unfavorable review about our experience with Progressive this week over a little (what we thought) was a rock chip in a window.

Rock chips are so common, the cost really should be spread on the double dump trucks, side dumps and other big trucks spewing rocks all over the highways around here.

So we contact Progressive, it should be like a $50 Novus type repair. The claims process was ridiculous. It was like a major occurrence. When did it happen, where did it happen, what was the other vehicle, send us pictures of the HIN, the boat from the aft, the other side of the boat from the bow and a close up of the damage. Ironically, the glass guy said it was only a scratch that did not penetrate and could not be repaired.

But if you go with Progressive, and maybe it is anybody now, I don't know, be prepared for a grueling process on ANY kind of a claim no matter how small...

 
Pat I can tell you how to get a window paid for if the rock came off a truck. Write down the number of the truck and time, they are all gps tracked now, then call the company. Then repeat after me " a rock fell from the TOP of the truck load". If you say that it was kicked up by the tire of the truck off the road you are not going to get it replaced. But if it can off the top of the truck then its the fault of the driver and they will replace your window. dont even bother going to your insurance company.
 
In fact most rocks coming from dump trucks or job site equipment fall off the frame and come bouncing out from between the tires. On large road projects the contractor has a person that responds to claims all week long and if the bock, DOT will read there contract to them.

Must be the local office. We had a totally different experience, first with a rock chip. Called, Safelite came out the next day (to the boonies, no less) fixed it, no deductable, nothing. Two months later, filed a claim on my truck for damage that was 5 months old (failed inspection due to hidden damage). They came out 3 days later to my house, took pictures, paid me on the spot.

We have big coverage, required because of a company umbrella liability policy but they were great with the claims I have had. Nothing on the boats yet, hopefully none ever... Hurricane Katia notwithstanding!! :disgust

I had the winshield replaced on our '93 Volvo after it was hit by a rock from one of those double trailers. Don't they have trailer-cover laws in Washington State? Driving around with uncovered loads would land them in hot water in NJ.
I have Safeco on everything, house, cars and boats(when I had them). Relatively expensive when compared to Geico, but Safeco is no hassle , pays quick, and the agent knows my name and answers the phone. .
 
$120 a year with about $35k agreed value. No claims yet. 10 year + member with my motorcycle and 3 year + with the boat.
 
We had our trailer break and the boat was damaged. Progressive didn't even come to the fiberglass shop to look at it as it wasn't an exorbanant amount; they just wrote the check. It was immediate with no hassle at all. Thinking about all the insurance stuff a guy has over his life, it was pretty amazing how easy it was.
