I mounted a backup bilge pump a few inches up from the main pump. I used a piece of aluminum angle as a mounting "shelf".

I wired it to a standard ON-OFF-MANUAL switch. I used a new wire run, all the way back to the panel - not tapping off of anything in case some sort of wiring issue was the problem with the main pump not working.
I also gave the pump its own output thru hull to isolate it from any problems with the main pump. This meant :sad drilling a new hole on the other side of the stern. I tried to match the look from the outside of the main one on the starboard side.
