Propeller Purchase

I am pretty sure I know what I want (aluminum) 3-13 1/2 or 3/4-15 but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good place to buy them or some brands that might be better. Is there a particularly great source on the web or should I just drive down to a local shop and likely need to order through them anyway?

It seems like the props I need are 130-170 bucks each and I would need two (spares). I am still considering stainless a bit but what we have works pretty darn well and I have not heard any conclusive evidence about stainless with our setup (twin 90s) making huge strides in performance or economy.

I just ordered a spare set for the TomCat from Kathy at E.Q. Marine. I got a good price from good people and I'm happy to drive the 65 miles to pick them up and leave money there. I'd say go with a good local place if you can.

Greg,

I can't speak to twin 90's, but on a single Honda 90 and my current 150 Yamaha, I saw about a 8-10% improvement in economy between aluminum and stainless. I have a friend with a Suzuki 90 that saw a similar difference between aluminum and stainless. The one difference a friend saw on his 25 with twin 90's was going to a 4 blade from a 3 blade. It raised the stern out of the water a little more, allowing the motors to be run more parallel to the direction of travel with less trim tabs and an improvement in economy.

Greg,

Don't know if you've already purchased the propellers yet and we're not sure if what we have is the correct prop for your motor. When we had the 19CD we purchased an extra Honda prop along with the wrench, washer & nut. Also there's a brand new Racor filter and a Honda internal fuel filter. We kept these items when we sold the 19CD because we planned on having them as spare parts for the 22 CD which came later (and then it got traded in on the Ranger Tug).

The Honda aluminum prop is still in the box, Part #58134-ZW1-015AH. It's described a 4 Blade Prop 13 x 15.

The wrench for the prop along with a nut & washer never used.

A new Racor filter; a new Honda Internal fuel filter.

If you or anyone else is interested, we'll have these items at the B'Ham CBGT this weekend. All items one package for $140.00.

Joe, Was that prop for a honda 90/75? If so, I think it could do the job as a backup which is all we really need. I would take the other items off your hands as well and bring some cash for you this weekend.

Hi Greg, We appreciate you taking the prop and the misc items. The prop was for our 75 Honda. We'll see you this weekend!

We just got our Aluminum props back from the prop shop.

They highly recomend that Lady KC Honda 135's be changed out to SS props by ....only.....PowerTech Propellers
They said you can count on them providing quality SS material.

For me it is hard to justify the return on investment
to change out our props..........
but then it cost $80 for the prop shop to straighten, cup, etc.,
our aluminum props.

With Honda's, it is very hard to find used SS props,
but will keep looking for the next several months.

However, here in shallow waters of the Carolina's
it is very easy to get into shallow sandy bottoms,
so SS props should be a priority.

I was always leary of running a steel propeller, i always thought righly or wrongly that if you were to hit something you might cause more damage than you would with a aluminum propeller. The aluminum propeller has some flex/give at least, while the steel propeller has less give/flex and might cause damage to your outboards drive shaft if hit hard enough.

I actually like these Piranha composite props. They seem to cost about the same or less than aluminum, you can change out the pitch and then send the ones that don’t work with you setup back. If you dig a prop, you can replace the blade for $25 and they are so light you really are not too out of balance when you do loose a blade and you just want to get home and not change it in the water. I don’t know what other think, but they are working for me with a single 115 Suzuki on my 22’. I’m running a 4 prop 18 pitch. Here is the site: http://www.piranha.com
