Props to West Marine support.

I got to say that West Marine has earned some respect from me. I had a recent episode where my trailer jack Fulton F2 had broken. I was told by the manufacturer that it could be covered under warranty since it was a lifetime product. The manufacturer wanted me to disassemble the jack to find out which internal part had failed. They planned to send me the replacement parts to repair the existing jack.

I contacted West Marine and they said they could order one in for me and exchange out my broken one even though the purchase was over 2 years ago and I did not have my original receipt. Im sure that it probably helps that I have purchased several thousand dollars of items in the past few years.

Nonetheless, I do value their assisting me and will be more likely to continue supporting them based on this experience. Good thing they did as I was shifting my purchases to Fisheries in a big way of late.

Good for West Marine. I've always been happy with WM ... wish there was one closer to The Villages.

As for needing to have a receipt - I wonder if large companies (WM, Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buys, etc) really need a receipt. (1) I'm guessing they can pull-up your purchase record from their retail database (particularly if you paid with a credit card) or (2) they're often willing to charge-it-off in the name of good customer relations. I'm sure they get burned occasionally but on relatively small items it's just easier to make the exchange.

I do realize that the larger retailers probably carry more clout with the manufacturers and might even be able to return items easier than a smaller store could. One example is Costco who has a generous customer return policy and that is probably matched by the agreements they have in place with vendors who wish to sell their merchandise at Costco.

They can look up my purchase history as I have an account there and this might have had some bearing on their willingness. It is nice to see them take it upon themselves to assist me. I hope that others have similar good experience there.

Many retailers new take your phone number to reference your purchase so that the record can be retrieved later if an adjustment is necessary.

Lowe's and Walmart are just two of the many that I know of.
