The Pacific Plate (dense, iron-rich, heavy and thin crust) is shoving easterly and under the westerly-moving Americas Plate (low density, silica-rich, light and thick). They grind together and today slipped. A 6.7 quake off the west coast of Vancouver Island at a depth of 14 miles resulted.
Big quake but deep and in a low population density area- just a sharp reminder to all folks along the Pacific coast that a major earthquake is possible any time, and not just in California or Alaska.
Huge tsunamis have occurred in the archeological past - and will in the future. Be sure you understand what to do with either a major tremor or tsunami. Forewarned is forearmed.
Hmmm - for those who don't know, I worked as a consultant for years to Civil Defense regarding possible geological hazards (and taught courses both for university students and adult education about geo hazards - hmmm - students nicknamed the course, 'Disaster a Day.'
