question for experienced owners

Hi everyone,
We will soon be the proud new owners of a C-Dory 25. We are wondering about some options that we have before our boat goes into production. How do you all do with storage space in your C-Dory's? We went with the refrigerator but we're wondering if it would be better to use that space for a cabinet and just put all of our cold stuff in a cooler. We are planning to use our new boat for mostly weekend trips and we know that the space is fine for that, but we are wondering what you all would do if you had a choice now. Another concern is where our 75 pound Airedale will sleep, but we know it will probably be right smack in the middle of us!

Thanks for your input,

Scott and Laurie

Hi Scott & Laurie, welcome to the group. I'll give you my opinion, but take it with a grain of salt. I've only had my cd25 for a few months.
Your dog should fit under the table or helm footshelf if you're not seated there. There's lots of room in the 25 so that shouldn't be a problem.
I ordered my 25 without the refigerator. The reason being that it would be to small to do much good... and I'd probably have to get down on my knees to see in it. I decided I'd go with one of the new Igloo 150 qt. 5 day coolers instead. I need the big cooler anyhow to hold all the fish I want to catch. (Hasn't happened yet). I put the cooler out on the cockpit deck and use it for a bench or footstool.
As far as the other options go, I recommend oredering all that you think you'll need from the factory. When it's all said and done I think they're probably cheaper and way less hassle for you than if you do it later.
Feel free to ask is you have more questions. I'm looking forward to meeting you and checking out your new boat at one of the gatherings this year. What color will she be?

Welcome, Scott and Laurie! We are just up the road from you in Fall City! I will let the CD25 guys answer your questions, we have a 22' cruiser, and it seems like there is ample storage for weekend trips. We got rid of the useless icebox (not a fridge) and put a hatch door to access storage under the helm seat. When do you take delivery? Be sure to start marking your calendar for the weekend events that are getting planned now, you will find these trips are highlight of your year! We also enjoy day cruises (went out last Saturday, Lake Washington, Lake Union, locks, Elliott Bay, met the Coast Guard, etc.) and always enjoy company. For sure one of the greatest things about a C-Dory is that it is a true twelve month cruising boat here on the Upper Left Coast...

Hi Scott and laurie,

We are at about the same point as you in the order process, so have no experience with the 25 yet.

We looked at Larry's boat (Helen O) and after talking with Les, decided to substitute a cabinet for the refrigerator. Our thinking was the same as Larry's.

You might also consider changing to the 135 Honda since both the 135 and 150 have nearly the same power and torque curves below 5000 RPM.
This is not just our thinking and is supported by the factory rep. at the SBS.

Hope this helps you. :)

The one exception may be to order canvas accessories (camper back, curtains, boat cover, etc.) from King Marine. They are cheaper when ordered direct.

Welcome to the world of C-Dory. I am also just up the road from you in North Bend. Although the boat (22 cruiser) is kept at our house on Guemes Is. I did not order the ice box and had a door put on with one shelf inside. Pat on Daydream removed his, as he has told you. Actually I removed it for him. The storage space is much more useful.

Hope to see you on the water.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think we will be calling and having the refrigerator replaced with a cabinet. The storage will be more useful and the fridge is a costly option. We should be finding out our production slot next week, we are hoping for March but it may not be until April. We are pretty sure we'll have her by the opening weekend May 1st and 2nd so we will be heading to Lopez Island. We are going out with Jeff from C-Dory in February for a sea trial. Since our past boating has always been in deep v hulls, we wanted to feel the difference especially in choppier water. We will be keeping her at Twin Bridges Marina in Anacortes - we talked with them at the boat show and they seem to have the best set up for our needs. We will be shopping for our electronics soon, so be prepared with more words of wisdom. Thanks!

Is a trailer in the plans for the future? The 25 is certainly eminently trailerable, and one of the neatest things about our group is all the places we end up - some of which are not connected via known channels to Swinomish Channel (for example, Lake Roosevelt or Lake Powell)

Scott and Laurie,

When you come out of the Swinomish Channel into Guemes Channel you will be heading straight towards Guemes Is. We launch into the little bay directly across from Cap Sante. Honk when you go by and I may join you. Always looking for an excuse to go cruisin'.

That is a very good point and we will definitely check that out. Jeff from C-Dory recommended the 150 to us because of the V-Tech that is available on the 150. That technology is supposed to make the engine the most fuel efficient therefore saving you on fuel in the long run. Will that be better than the 135 - I don't know. It was previously only available on the 225 and is new on the 150. We spoke with the Honda rep briefly about gauges at the boat show so maybe I will give him a call and get his sales pitch on it and then go from there. If anyone else has any info let me know. Thanks for the input.

Scott & Laurie--welcome to Twin Bridges--we've been keeping our boat there --22CD--for over a year now & we couldn't be happier--they are nice people--very accommodating. We live only 10 minutes from there--we call them when we leave the house & our boat is in the water waiting for us when we get there. If you have any questions let us know--wlv@earthlink.net

Hi Scott & Laurie,
We have a 25, and have storage instead of an ice box or refrigerator. Although it seems like the 25 has a lot of storage, it fills up really quickly as you use it. Like Larry, we have a big cooler that we keep in the cockpit for longer trips. For weekend trips we have a smaller cooler that allows more room to move around the cockpit. The good news is that the boat rides better with a load, so have fun filling it up.

We boat with three dogs--two about 60 lbs and one about 15 lbs--plenty of room for them in a 22 (we thought they would stay in the cockpit at night--wrong--one under the table, small one at the helm seat floor and the other aft by the galley floor).

We use the Petstep ramp off the transom to get the dogs ashore at a dock or beach with reasonable slope.

Welcome to the group and congratulations on your new CD 25. We have a good sized dog, too, (but not quite as big as yours)and he curls up on his special cushion right under the dinette table.

C-Brat Dog Fanciers- My 150 lb Great Dane female, Shadow, sleeps in the V-berth, and I sleep on the dinette berth, which seems to be a fairly equitable division of space. This suits me just fine, as we both can get up and down and in and out of bed much easier with this arrangement. Reckon my spousal unit will have to sleep with the dog when she comes along (in the "Ladies Only Lounge"). Joe, Shadow, and Cathy(?).

Heh heh heh...that would be this little gal, eh Joe?

Hi from San Diego. We have owned our 25 since last May and make weekend trips to Oceanside, Long Beach, Catalina, ect. We would not know what to do without our Refrig under the helm seat. Those trips, our early evening snacks (maybe even some white wine) are all made better by this conveniece. We have bought slide out wire drawers for the other storage areas, a big plastic box for under the v berth removal cushion, installed a wine glass and paper towl racks over the galley and added a mircro wave and toaster oven on the shelf aft port side (just before you go out of the door). Additionally, we installed a 1800 w inverter (expensive though) to operate some appliances while at sea or away from dock power. My fishing poles (3) are mounted inside the pilot house on the ceiling and our wine cabinet turned out to be the space below the table where two cases of two buck chuck can be stowed along with other items of extreme importance :)

Additionally, we run two small circular dehumidifiers all the time while at dock power (one in the berth and one under the table). This sure controls the damp air. Another item we deem very important is the diesel stove & heater. It sure makes life easier on cool days and nights.

Ok...I have talked too much but hope you find a little of this helpful.
