Questions about '82 22ft CDory with transom-area damage

Here's what the owner said about the boat in Juneau: "The hull appears to be sound, but the transom has had to be reinforced due to compression of the balsa core between the inner and outer fibreglass. I believe that the balsa core in the bottom is probably saturated. I'll look for the engine SN. It was rebuilt by Rocky's Marine in 2005, and we estimate it has had less than 300 hours on it since then.
You are right about the original configuration, but I had to rip out the bunks and compartments underneath due to rot in the wood; I replaced the framework, but have not completed it, so the cushions are high and dry in our attic for now.
The aft cabin bulkhead needs replacement, or its lower area at least, again due to rot."

The hull is a 1981. From what it sounds like this boat might take quite a bit more work than the one here and the engines are a good bit older/have been worked on extensively. Or theres the chance that the one here needs just as much work but it just hasn't been opened up yet.
 
Welcome to the group. Do not get discouraged. There are solid older C-Dory boats out there for all budgets.

The C-Dory boats are great well built tuff ass boats for sure and they can for sure handle a lot of tuff, hard use...but not abuse via the drill and not properly completing each hole drilled.

I re-built a 1984 C-Dory 18' Angler and took here back down to the bare hull and started over to include interior gel-coating. I stopped counting at around 160 ish thru hull openings, but, each of them were handled properly so we found zero rot.

And yes....I did go a bit over budget but what a wonderful boat I ended up with. Sadly I sold her....but, I do have first buyer's rights promised to me. Many days I wish I had C-Byrd back. Take a look in my FREEBYRD photo album....a sub-folder in there for C-Byrd. It was kind of my nautical 68 GTO re-fab gig.

I think the early flat bottom C-Dorys used plywood in the hull bottom and balsa in the transom, as the transom was curved. A proper transom repair requires the removal of the inside skin of the transom, removal and replacement of the core, and re-glassing the inner skin. The plywood core can stand some water soaking in and still have strength, whereas the balsa rots to mush.
 
The Juneau boat is an original "Hunky Dory", before the name was changed to C-Dory. Probably an '80 or '81

If this was in the lower 48 it would be a temptation for me at $5500. It does look really rough though.

I had a friend who owned two of these boats in the late '80's. He kept one in Cabo San Lucas, Baja Sur, and the other in Petersburg, Ak. Wintered with one and summered with the other.
 
Hi everyone, so we ended up getting a beautiful 16ft '96 angler! One turned up unexpectedly at a great price and we were first in line. It's been a wonderful little boat and I couldn't be happier about it! It came with a '96 50hp 4stroke yamaha and a '01 6hp 2 stroke Johnson. I started from square one with outboard knowledge so getting these motors running has been an great education in maintenance and repair. So that's the update for now, thanks again for the advice!
 
We got an '86 Angler a few years ago and saw some unplugged holes in the splash well that caused the glass to bulge on the starboard side of the well. Because of this issue negotiated a price of $10k. Finally ready to tackle replacing the splash well, even knowing what we might, find the pics are depressing. Take a look in the album. The transom seems good. Any advice would be appreciated.
