Quiet lake cruising in NY/NJ area

Unbelievably,I am relocating to NYC next week (I won't bore you with the sad details). Of course I will bring my CD22 with me as a Sanity Retention Device.

My favorite quick cruises are on quiet lakes with interesting anchorages. Does anyone know of likely locations within a two hour drive of Hoboken?

I will certainly cruise the Erie Canal, Lake Champlain, the Finger Lakes and all that while I am out there but I am looking for some lazy day quick getaways. Anything more than a couple hours drive kills a whole day and I just can't do that until me son gets old enough to come along.

Thanks!

wow, I think that's going to be a tuff one. If you don't like cruising on the Hudson River your best bet looks like to the west in New Jersey but I am not familiar with lake cruising around there, even the Delaware River on the NJ PA border is about 80 miles or so. Why dont you try googling some of those lakes in northern NJ like Lake Hopatcong or Wanaque Reservoir, or Greenwood Lake. They are small but might work distance wise. Your right about needing more time to get up to the nice NY lakes.

There is really no such thing as a quiet C-Dory 22 capable lake in the area you are talking about. You might give some consideration to the saltwater side and think about LI Sound which has great boating and which is accessible from launch ramps. If you want to discuss LI Sound, which I have boated for decades, e-mail me.

Go to Burlington, NJ and put in at the excellent county ramp right next to Curtin's Marina. Go down the Delaware to Philadelphia and beyond. You will have a ball. You can try Lake Hopatcong and even Lake Mohawk and Swartzwood Lake in Sussex county. Check for hp restrictions.

I spent a few weeks in Long Island Sound as we were cruising the East Coast (much larger boat)--but there were many great places to go, good fishing and many adventures. I don't see it as a negative (although I would never live in NYC....)

Hoboken, NJ, looks like an ideal place to cruise a lot of the East Coast. Like thataway, we went through there in a sailboat, and I wish we could go back with Journey On.

You're right on the Hudson, and that's a great cruise, a lot of history and neat places. We spent a week on a mooring just off Grand Central Park, touring NYC. Then, went up the Hudson to the Eire Canal, staying at the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club and Waterford on the way there. At Waterford you can turn to port and go through the Eire, one of the great cruises in the world, or go straight up the Champlain Canal to the St Lawrence.

You can go up and down the Jersey coastline in the ICW, staying out of blue water (though that would be a kick.) As dotnmarty mentioned above, you're close to the Delaware River, and you can go through the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal to the Chesapeake Bay (or drive there.)

My God, you're in the middle of a great cruising ground. You've now got me envious, I'll start thinking how to get Journey On and us back to the North-East.
