Radar / Trim tabs for a 22 c dory

I have come up with some cash and need to take the plunge on adding some items to a 22 c dory. The intent is to up grade an add a radar and some trim tabs. Problem is I have no concrete ideas on what is the best way to go. I'm hoping that others have some information that the would be willing to share as to what works best for this size boat. I do not cruise a lot as of yet, just to and from the fishing grounds, but do hope to make some extended travels in the near future. If you have some suggestions I would apperciate the input. well first what electronics do you have in the boat now? That will make a difference in what radar system you will be getting. Can you add radar to your current system or do you have to start from scratch?
 
Quite a difference in dollars. Radar is much more expensive, but definetly more desirable, in my opinion. I've got both, can live without the tabs, but when I need radar, I really need it. Big safety issue.
 
I suggest the Furuno 1715 for the Radar: 7" screen, 2.2 KW, and 18" radome. 5.2 degrees horizontal beam width--is reasonable descrimination. It can easily be mounted from the top, handing down frm the electronics shelf--folded up if necessary, and down when you need it.

Furuno makes one of the best radars and had been at it a long time. You can input NMEA 0183 waypoints on the screen and it has some navigational features, as well as readout of other NMEA 0183 data.

I use an inexpensive but effective mount--PVC toilet flanges with 4" PVC pipe. The bottom flange bolted onto the top of the boat's cabin. The upper flange is mounted to starboard (can be from Wal Mart cutting board. A cable pass thru into the PVC can be water tight, and the cable run down into the top of the cabin, and then foreward to the display. The installation is quite easy and straight forward.

I would suggest Bennett Trim tabls--but I also have owned Lenco and had good service with those--the Bennett are hyraulic and may be slightly more difficult to install--depends if you have kicker motor and swim step.

I had a 22ft 1990 Angler which I sold last year...I put on some Powerful, trouble free Lenco electric trim tabs...myself....get the biggest ones you can......the best thing I ever did for that boat along with an autopilot............as far as radar there is only one name you need to know ..FURUNO....the best most Reliable there is....the choice of most commerical fishermen

I say the same thing every time the trim tab question comes up. The Bennett M120 Sport Tabs were made for the CD22.
 
Thanks for the information, I will have to look and see what brand the elctonics are that are on board already.... it seems they are some type of larance unit that has a fish finder, depthsounder route tracker ect all in one unit. As you can tell I'm new at this and have only used the boat a few times as of now but feel a radar system should be part of my navigational plans.
 
Just a note to thank everyone for the information they provided concerning the trim tabs and radar. I think that we ( the co-owner who never posts) have decided on the tabs but will be talking a bit more with E.Q marine as to radar installation. We have a height problem with the place that we keep the boat. The highest object we could place on top of the boat is about 18 inches and still have headroom to park. I think I saw some information recently about a hinged mast that may alow us to put a Furuno 1715 brand on board with out a problem. I'll update you as to the progress.
