Raymarine S1000 Wireless Autopilot

What I'm really asking is the hose fitting just standard pipe thread where the hoses attach or flange or what?

I have a guy who going to make up some hoses for me.

Go to the Fore and Aft page, scroll down to the middle, and they have illustrations of typical pump installations: by the manual steering pump, by the engine actuator, etc. Listed are the fittings you need with a description. Further down the page are descriptions of bulkhead installations, etc. You don't have to order them from F&A, but you certainly will get a good description. Better than I could give. I remember that they seemed very helpful when I talked to them. I think they're the Florida distributor for Teleflex, and have all the parts in stock, a big plus. They also have hoses in various lengths, made up with end fittings.

An example: the fitting between the hose and pump is Connector Fitting
3/8" Tube (M) - 1/4" NPT (M) . I'm not sure what that (M) means, but they sent me three.

Also, you'll need hydraulic fluid. The stuff Teleflex sells is Mil spec fluid, and you can buy a gallon of the same stuff at your local airport for the same as is charged for the Teleflex fluid.

Journey on - thanks for the links and info - I have a auto shop who can make up the hoes here locally but was uncertain the actual factory hose had to get the correct "T's" Do the hoses use a just a pipe thread or is it a flange?

The link you sent shows both.

By the way, I sent you a PM on where you mounted the compass - right now I'm trying to figure out how to make a bracket for the rudder indicator to mount.

Don't know why that's so unbelievable - this same place made hydraulic hoses for all my heavy equipment when the dealer couldn't!

Ok, just an update on my S1 installation - everything is installed except for the hoses ( waiting for them to arrive) and the rudder indicator where I'm making up a bracket.

Fired up the Autopilot / Garmin - put a waypoint and everything seems to good, it shows the waypoint name and distance etc.

I'll post some images of the install when i get'er up and running.
 
There are several S-1000 threads so just picked this one for this update. I got a chance to use my s-1000 off shore for the fist time yesterday. I went about 25 miles out into the gulf. The seas were 2-3feet off the port quarter. the wind was 10 to 15 also off the port. I got on course and set the s-1000. It worked without a hitch for the two hour trip. I did hit the left steer button a few times to correct for the wind and waves. The sweet spot for wind and seas was running at 3500rpm and a speed of 16mph. I do not have it connected to a gps that has waypoint capability so it only was in "point and shoot" mode. I was impressed with how well it keep the course. I also used it on the return trip. The wind and seas subsided somewhat for the return trip. On the way home I ran 4300rpm and was making 23-25mph. It also did well in the following seas. The pump motor did not get the least bit warm. I am very pleased with the S1000. For anyone interested, I think it's a good value. I went 52 miles and burned 14 gal of gas. I am also very pleased with the performance of the C-Dory. For a 22 food boat it was a very smooth ride. My trip is on my SPOT page.
 
I really like my S-1000 also. It was completely plug and play and in around 200 hours I haven't experienced any problems. Once connected to GPS it is really great in that wind and current corrections aren't and issue. One unexpected plus I found last februrary was while cruising behind Sanabel Island in unfamiliar waters a heavy fog rolled in and my visibility was probably 100'. I was able to set waypoints to follow which allowed me to slowly cruise ahead to a safe anchorage. I haven't experienced any overheating issues and I quickly became accustomed to the noise of the pump.
 
Because of the early part of this particular thread leading some people to believe that the s1000 is so noisy a conversation cannot be comfortably held when it is on, I would like to link this thread to another short thread that seems to indicate that these problems must have been overcome in more recent versions of the s1000.

To put a quantitative number on the S1000 noise I got out the db meter. The A reading while sitting at the helm is 63db. After using it for awhile, I've gotten use to it.

Could some of you with this unit installed direct me to pictures of where you have the unit mounted? I'd like to see my options. Thanks.
 
Pat, Ill take pix for you this weekend and post them but the hoses that come almost dictate that the pump is installed directly behind the helm unless you get longer ones. That's where mine is. The electronics are there too. Art on Sea Angel has some in his album, although I'm not sure he has the S-1000. It's the easiest install and (gasp!) I think you could do it yourself.... :lol: :wink: I'll send you the installation video if you want or you can find it online.

I believe Fred has his mounted under the galley (I think). Apparently Les rigged it for him with extra long tubing.

Further away from the helm is desirable given the loud "frog" like sounds that are emitted from the pump. :roll:

As for the unit itself, I'm not in love with it. It's very finnicky, i.e sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes I have to work with it. Sometimes it goes straight, sometimes it makes weird sudden turns. Sometimes it takes the heading, sometimes it won't. Oh well.
 
She didn't put "Patty here" but the earlier post as indeed Patty, who surprised me with an S1000 for my birthday. Peter, some Q and beer may yet be involved for you, bud! Patty thinks I ought to be able to do it, but I pretty much know better...

There are a couple pix in "interior stuff" in my album. Pic 1 is where I put the on-off button and cradle for the remote. Pic 4 is the pump/computer and warning horn. Doing it over, I think I would mount it vertically, but it works fine (easier to get to the bleed screws). The lengths of the hoses and your space will likely dictate where you need to mount the pump. There is a sound level test link available through my last post above.

Pat & Patty --

On our CD-22, we mounted the pump in the galley cabinet in the forward outboard corner on a flat shelf that we have put in there. The head of the pump, where the hoses go, is aimed outboard. The long centerline of the pump is 90 degrees to the centerline of the boat. The computer is on the athwartship forward bulkhead of the galley, fairly high up and outboard of the sink. That makes it easy to connect to the pump. The hoses that came with the unit were replaced with longer hoses which are pretty easy to order. We mounted the control device (wireless) in its holding bracket with screws through the holding bracket into a block of wood that was attached to the side of the boat under the window with 3M 5200. Finally, we had a blank over a hole in the dash where a guage had been previously. I pulled the blank out and installed a square black plexi plate in its place and put the emergency button into the plexi. All in all, I am quite pleased with this arrangement which roughly duplicates the installation that seems to be commonly used on the CD-22 based on a review of this site. I see no reason why something similar would not work on a CD-25.

I kept stuff out of the cabinet on which the helm seat is installed as I eventually want to put a 12V slide out Engel freezer in there. Ssshhh, don't tell El and Bill!

We love our S1000 - it is certainly one of the best additions on the boat. We installed ours on our CD22 under the helm seat. We have the refridge installed under the helm seat also, with the pump, usb hub, etc mounted behind the refridge. No noise at all in this location. I did need to order longer steering tubes off of e-bay to make this location work, but fairly easy/cheap.
