Reasons for selling C-Dory

Well. it was a very tough decision to put my 2003 C-Dory up for sell. I retired in Oct. 2005 and I'm moving 6.5 miles south of John Day, Oregon. I have a small 28.8 acre farm that boarders the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness Area. I left this Farm to Join the Marines 36 Years ago and now I'm going back home. There's not much use for a C-Dory in that country and with gas prices, especially diesel for my Dodge, it's no longer practical. I had planed on towing my boat to Alaska, etc. , but I refuse to let the oil companies get into my shorts.
I plan on getting a couple of gaited mules to enjoy the back country. If gas gets way out of line, I'll ride my mule into town...
I have enjoyed my C-Dory. I used it primarily on the mouth of the John Day fishing for Channel Cats, so I had no need for electronics. I have a great fishing hole there and often times caught more than 25 Cats per day...they are very good eating as they come out of fresh water...not muddy tasting at all.
Also, with life stock, you pretty much have to stay on the farm to take care of you critters.
I joined this site some time ago, but have not been too active, and have never attended a gathering. It was a tough call, but I need to purchase a tractor, portable sawmill, and some well drilling equipment.

OHHRA!

wellll, your reasons will have to go before the board for approval before you can actually sell your boat :)
That's a nice part of the world, I used to have a friend that had a glass shop and a retirement home there. Last I heard he sold out and is now ranching in NV...When we retire, we'll probably end up in the Sumpter Valley, you can come over and borrow our boat :)

Ken

Thanks....I'll let you ride one of my Mules back into the Strawberrys... OR....I'll take you on a float trip down the John Day river in my drift boat 8)

Reckon as how you and I are in reverse stages.........I always wanted to have a small farm, since I worked on ranches in Montana when I was in high school. So, in the '70's I purchased a few acres (13 acres), and at different times, had pigs, chickens, rabbits, horses, a burro, and beef cows. After hearing my wife's concerns about the cows (the only time any problems occurred with the cows was when I was at work), I finally sold the cows. Now I have more time for the C-Dory and I don't even have to worry about putting up hay in the summer to feed them in the winter. (Obviously, with the nature of this hobby farm, I spent far more money than I made off of it......so more money now available for "West Marine"... :wink )
Now the only livestock on the place is a dog and a C-Dory corralled up in the shop, always ready to cruise out the front gate of the place.

Dave,

I'm an old ranch hand myself. Worked for Clyde Holliday in High School. I joined the Marines 14 days out of High School and came home on leave for 10 days before my deprture across the big pond. I remeber my Dad telling me to get a real good look at all the Pondarosa Pine trees, because it was going to be a long time before I got to see them again. Well, I've been dreaming of making it back home ever since then, but had a career that carried me to Alaska for a decade, etc. and had a family to support. I'm really enjoying my retirement :smiled and I am an avid big game hunter...I'll be able to ride my mules right out my back door into the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. This is my home and where I belong...I'm one of the local boys :wink I can always fly to Alaska to spend time with my best friend on his 25 foot Glaicer Craft in Prince William Sound... My wife can look after our live stock.

For sure, keep her around. :wink . I certainly can sense your desire to turning full circle and returning to your roots. What a wonderful feeling that has to be for you.

(Even though you've decided to sell your C-Dory, be sure to stop in and visit with your fellow C-Brats on the thread when you get the opportunity!)

Dave,

Thanks and be safe out there. Keep your bow up and your ass down...or as we use to say in the " Suck "...Keep your chin up and your ass down. :moon

OhhRA!!

A BIG SEMPER FI, BRO!
THE SAYING GOES, DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH ANYTHING THAT CAN'T LOVE YOU BACK. BOATS INCLUDED.
SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE AN AFFECTION FOR THE FARM STYLE ENVIRONMENT. MY GRANDPARENTS HAD A SMALL (10 ACRE) FARM FOR MOST OF THEIR LIVES. WE HAD SOME GREAT TIMES HANGING AROUND. ALWAYS HAD A FIRE GOING, FISHED IN THE CREEK, AND EVEN THREW A CORNCOB AT THE CHICKENS, A TIME OR TWO, THAT IS, UNTIL OUR GRANDMOTHER CAUGHT US, THEN ALL HELL WAS PAID.
I DON'T THINK IT MATTERS IF YOU'RE BOATING OR FARMING, JUST THAT YOU'RE ENJOYING WHAT LIFE HAS TO OFFER. I SAY, GOOD LUCK, AND ENJOY.
BEST REGARDS,
PAT

i sure do remember the bends and mofo's!
i received my honorable, in norfolk va. while stationed at the marine corps barracks, usnb, norfolk. can't say i enjoyed the 45 months of active duty, would have been 48, but thank god for a 90 day school cut.
likewise, always good to meet another service man. (jarhead). my heart really goes out to our service people who are being wounded and/or killed aboard.
if the politicians had their lives at risk, i think things would be a lot different, ya know? that's not to say i'm against the war on terrorism.
well, corporal, with a boat or without, stay in touch with this site and keep us informed as to whats happening down on the farm.
may the wind be always at your back and the rains fall softly upon your fields.
best regards and thank you for your service to our country.

Pat,

I didn't enjoy my 36 months much either. I received my Honorable discharge out of Camp Pendleton, CA. I've been going to my Nam Vet 3/5 reunions since 2000. We hold them in GA. :beer :beer :beer :beer :beer :beer :beer :beer :beer :smilep

We either deal with the "Bad Guys" over there OR....in our own streets...

I wonder if "Draft Dodgers" have reunions???

Semper Fi... Bro!

Be Safe and thanks for serving your county.....somebody has to step up...or we would not be able to enjoy the freedom and benefits that so many take for granted. :wink

PS: I'm a Hollywood Marine :smiled MCRD- no sand fleas :smile
