Rebuilding of a Honda BF40

Elsinore, Jim. Elsinore.

Ahhhhhh... I always took my chances with the little old ladies in their Buicks on the road. 8)

Did you catch my faux pas? It was a Honda CB-350. You can tell my fingers automatically type "CD". You can sleep well tonight. [/i]

Did you ever line up the CB350 with the 150 to see if any oil leaked out? Were there any pins to prevent that? I got a new ring for Christmas.

We need to start a thread on all the old foreign bikes we've owned.

Not a bad idea. It'd give us a place to talk about our Elsinores, Wombats ect. rather than hi-jack a serious thread.

I agree! My last post was my weird sense of humor way of saying too many off point responses on the field, 15 yard penalty, still first down. What can be even more frustrating to me is to have all of the possible answers to a situation or problem given but never hearing what the actual solution turned out to be. bshillam, please don't leave us hanging, what has happened?

So we dropped it off weeks ago. Last I spoke to the service advisor he said they ordered parts from Honda and it would most likely be one week for shipment and one to repair. That was three weeks ago....I placed several calls but got put on hold. I was assuming they were short staffed this week due to weather and holiday. I'll be placing another call next week. I'll be thinking positive thoughts in the mean time.

IMHO you are being scammed big time. I would ask how anyone can determine that the rings were all lined up WITH OUT completely disassembling the engine in question. You can make an educated guess at best, but I wouldn't pay anybody their shop rates for a guess. If you had smokey exhaust, oil-fouled spark plugs, acompanied by excessive oil consumption, that would be an indication of ring problems. A leak down test would confirm the indication. Nothing in my years of experience would indicate a major blowby problem by simply lineing up the ring end gaps.

Yeah! I didn't want to be the cinical guy for once but I too always was suspicious. Ring problems in my opinion result is oil burning, not oil leaking. Long delays, being put on hold, exotic diagnosis, exagerated claims (It will be better than new) all put up red flags. Has any estimate of cost been made? If not it may be a blank check signed by you. Guess who is responsible for the cost of repairs if it is not covered by warranty. You can argue all you want but he has your boat! If it was my boat I would get it out of there or at the very least protect myself with a written estimate before repairs, necessary or otherwise BEGIN!

bshillam, if this were my boat I would drive over to that dealer and have my boat out of there at the first possible moment. I am sure there are enough of us on this site that we can direct you to another Honda dealer who will provide you with quality service.

Yes, I called this week and the shop stated again that there was no machining work done on the motor and it is complete. I'll be picking it up this weekend and will report back. In addition I confirmed no cost as the motors are still covered under warranty.

Just FYI for all us BF40 owners. I have a Honda shop manual for that engine and will be glad to copy specific pages or topics for anyone who needs the information.

And hopefully the work itself that they did, is under warranty. Take it out and run the heck out if it for awhile until you're sure you're OK. Glad you are getting it back!

So I picked it up on Saturday and they gave me no paperwork. Said that they were waiting on Honda to finish up on their end?? That they would mail a copy of all the work preformed to the house. And no charge as it was under warranty. I spoke to the tech while we were loading it and again he insist there was no machining work done. I'll have to report running and paperwork once it comes in.

Sounds very strange. Almost like they found something small and fixed it and sent Honda a big bill for parts and labor. Did they offer to give you the parts they replaced? I think they're supposed to. Hope your engine is A-OK!

I don't recall reading it in here for certain but I'm guessing Sportcraft did the work. If so I think it is pretty safe to quit worrying any about this. I believe Sportcraft is the oldest Honda dealer on the west coast. I also know that Honda is mighty particular about their dealers/techs. Just a feeling based on knowing the Sportcraft owners and past experience with them and with Honda. I would be very shocked if there was anything fishy going on.

Milehog,
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them. All of our dealings with sales and service there have been quite positive.

My intention is to keep the OP on his toes. Just 'cause others have been treated right there dosen't mean he will. Nor just 'cause I wasn't dosen't mean he won't.
