Recommendations for good malt whiskeys

All, I need to pick up a birthday gift for a buddy. He's a big fan of Bushmills and Red Breast but I'd like to get him something different than what he normally drinks. I don't drink whiskey so I'm wondering if the crowd has some recommendations for a guy who drinks Bushmills.

Jamiesons (Irish) is a good, similar tasting alternative to Bushmills and is excellent value for the money without going to expensive single malts which are mostly not worth it. Glenlivet is still drinkable if it is 12 or 18 yrs old but Glenfiddich has suffered from mass popularity and is now sold at a very young age.
If you get into the really expensive stuff it is a very taste sensitive topic where the only solution I know is to spend a week at a little pub in Cambridge UK near the university where they have just about every whisky ever made and the barmaid is an expert.

The detox bill only adds to the expense.

If I had any liver left I would immediately volunteer to be on any research group you may care to set up on the topic. but BTDT.

Sounds like your pal likes to keep it Irish..if thats the case there are a lot of very good ones...from 20 to 300 bucks a bottle...in the lower range you might try " The Tyrconnel" Named after a famous race horse. If you really want to impress him... (Hey, he should be damned pleased with the "Big T", ) the spend a buck and get a bottle of Middleton Rare for about 130$. Both of these are "single malts" I , myseld always prefferred the blended ones, and for my money ya cant beat Tullymore Dew, about 25$. A little less pricey, and almost as good is John Powers...Jameson? Ha! thats the swill that the Irish wont drink, so they ship it over here!
